Town of Barnstable Announces MA250 Signature Event
“The Declaration of Independence -A Reading”
July 2, 2026 | Barnstable Town Hall

The Town of Barnstable is proud to announce a signature MA250 commemorative event marking the 250th anniversary of the Continental Congress vote for American independence on July 2, 1776. Titled “The Declaration of Independence — A Reading,” will be held on Thursday, July 2, 2026 at 6:30 PM at Barnstable Town Hall, Second Floor, James H. Crocker, Jr. Hearing Room, 367 Main Street, Hyannis. The program will honor Cape Cod’s profound influence on the revolutionary spirit that helped shape the founding of the United States. Thirteen local veterans will stand in representation of the original thirteen colonies, while also reflecting the diversity and evolving promise of America. Participants will represent each branch of the United States military and each of Barnstable’s seven villages, including recognition of those for whom the Declaration of Independence did not yet fully apply — women, Black Americans, and Indigenous people whose voices and experiences are essential to the nation’s full story. Music will play a central role throughout the evening, with performances of traditional fife and drum and patriotic musical selections by the Barnstable Town Band. The ceremony will culminate in a community sing-along of The Star-Spangled Banner, inviting residents and visitors alike to reflect upon the ideals, sacrifices, and shared responsibilities of American independence. This MA250 event seeks not only to commemorate history, but to celebrate Barnstable’s unique place within it — where Cape Cod’s maritime economy, village traditions, independent spirit, and revolutionary voices helped inspire a nation.
