Contemporary Silhouettes:  The Art of Cut Paper Exhibit through 11/19

Contemporary Silhouettes:  The Art of Cut Paper Exhibit through 11/19

November 19, 2017

Contemporary Silhouettes: The Art of Cut Paper
October 11 – November 19
Opening reception will be held on Friday, October 13 from 5:30 to 7:00pm

Cutting portraits, generally in profile from black card, became popular in the mid-18th century and the tradition has continued into the 21st century. Silhouettes represented a cheap but effective alternative to the portrait miniature. The group of contemporary artists in this exhibit draw upon the tradition of silhouettes as well as many folk traditions for inspiration, including Scherenschnitte, kirigami, Wycinanki, and others to create custom papercuttings, and this exhibit features an abundance of extraordinarily intricate work produced in the art form of cut paper.
Hours:
10 – 4   Tuesday – Saturday
1 – 4   Sunday

Location: Cahhoon Museum of Art, 4676 Falmouth Rd, Cotuit, MA 02635

Mary Chilton Winslow: Survivor of the Mayflower Voyage 11/29

Mary Chilton Winslow: Survivor of the Mayflower Voyage 11/29

November 29, 2017

Come to Cotuit Library as we listen to Joyce A. Prince discuss the story of her recent book about Mary Chilton Winslow, a passenger and survivor on the Mayflower. Amazon describes the book as such:
“This is the story of Mary Chilton Winslow, survivor of the Mayflower voyage. If James Chilton and his family had not been courageous and willing to sacrifice their country and comfortable life in England and Holland to seek religious freedom, the story of Mary Chilton Winslow would not be known.  We will never know the extent of the frightening moments aboard the Mayflower nor the harrowing adventures experienced by a thirteen year old girl (an orphan) but we can imagine some of her feelings of loneliness and isolation in a new place. From the story we have an idea of Mary’s perseverance, stamina, and willingness to accompany her parents on a voyage which will go down in history as an amazing step in the creation of a new settlement and the beginning of a new country: America.” (www.amazon.com)
This program is free but please register at cotuitlibrary.org/events or contact the Library.
