JFK:  Lands He Loved-A Centennial Celebration in Art in Hyannis 8/1 -10/9

JFK:  Lands He Loved-A Centennial Celebration in Art in Hyannis 8/1 -10/9

September 23, 2017

Gallery Artrio is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of President John F. Kennedy with a special exhibition of paintings of landscapes often associated with the him. Seven artists revisit these landscapes in oil and pastel in this summer’s exhibition, “JFK: Lands He Loved. A Centennial Celebration in Art.

President Kennedy gave us the Cape Cod National Seashore in 1961, he summered in Hyannis Port and had his ‘Summer White House” there, and he visited Ireland, the home of his ancestors, as a visitor in the 1940’s and as president in 1963.  These artists have spent time visiting and painting these special places.

The exhibition will be open August 1 to October 9, 2017, with a special opening reception on Thursday, August 3.

Mysteries & Revelations Discovering Cape Cod’s Museum Treasures 9/24-11/26

Mysteries & Revelations Discovering Cape Cod’s Museum Treasures 9/24-11/26

September 24, 2017

…An historic painting of great value was stolen from Provincetown and years later found in Tucson, Arizona…an engraved spoon enigmatically framed leads to the discovery of a little- known funeral practice…an outrageous scam to harvest gold from sea water is revealed…

Intriguing objects and their stories reveal fascinating facts about the unfamiliar past of Cape Cod and the Islands in this first Cape-wide collaboration of 36 art, science and history organizations on exhibit at the Cape Cod Museum of Art (CCMoA).
Pondering unsolved mysteries or questioning true or false stories behind a wide range of artifacts, paintings, photographs, and curiosities, visitors will learn the remarkable truths and legends uncovered by these singular treasures preserved by each participating organization.
“Mysteries & Revelations” was organized by Cape Cod Museum of Art Director Edith (Deede) Tonelli and Guest Curator Amanda Wastrom.
“How do we get to the truth?” asks Tonelli.  “This exhibit shines a light on the work of Cape Cod museum professionals who are on the front lines of documenting and preserving our history.  Ultimately, we—our culture and our history—are defined by the stories that we preserve and share with our community.  We invite our community to enter this show with their own stories and add to our shared cultural identity.”

Public Reception, Thursday, September 28, 5:30 – 7pm

The Town of Barnstable, in partnership with the Cape Cod Art Association, offers day excursions to this unspoiled landscape. Davis Bates: Saturday 4:00 – 5:00 PM
Davis has been singing and telling stories for over thirty-eight years (longer according to his mom), in schools, libraries, and community settings around New England and across the country. Folk traditions legend Pete Seeger has inspired his work and has, in turn, called Davis “thoughtful, creative, human, and a fantastic storyteller”; Davis’ traditional and participatory style of telling empowers and encourages audiences of all ages to take the stories home with them to share with others, whether he is relating an age old international folktale, or a story about his grandparents. His songs have very singing choruses, which he teaches to his audiences, and are often accompanied by spoons or a dancing wooden lumberjack dog named Bingo.
Still Willow: Sunday 5:30 – 6:30 PM
Still Willow is the mostly acoustic singer-songwriter duo of Kim Moberg and Ric Allendorf, who share the role of vocals, instrumentation, and songwriting. Musically, Still Willow is influenced by a variety of genres including Folk, Americana, and a myriad of singer-songwriters both old and new. Their original music expresses a sensitivity to personal themes made universal; love, loss, renewal, and celebration. And their carefully interpreted cover songs take a path through a personal connection that honors the source material, re-aligned to Kim and Ric’s life experiences. (www.stillwillowmusic.com/bio)
Sparrow Blue: Sunday 7:00 – 8:00 PM
Sparrow Blue, Acoustic Fiddle and Guitar songwriting duo from Eastern Massachusetts, consists of Katy Boc and Todd Nickerson.
Having met in 2014, Katy and Todd began writing songs together after discovering a mutual love for American roots music. It wasn’t long before they began performing as a duo, featuring their original songs. Over the past year, Sparrow Blue has performed at venues such as the Spire Center for the Performing Arts, Club Passim, TOAD Cambridge, Atwoods Tavern, and Rockwood Music Hall. In November of 2015 they released their debut album, Mabel, which Red Line Roots called “a sweet rootsy sound that is clean and crisp as it displays hints of Americana goodness” and South Shore Living called “lilting, dark, and spellbindingly catchy”.
