Smith’s work, more often than not, is an interpretation of current events. Her ideas can also be drawn from the smaller sphere of family and friends. Her latest work responds to a list of words banned by the current administration that can have devastating real-world consequences. Styles vary and are influenced by traditional women’s stitchery, folk art, and contemporary practices. In addition to discussing her work, she will also discuss Women in Pants: Manly Maidens, Cowgirls and Other Renegades, a book she coauthored about her collection of antique photographs.

Catherine Smith is an installation artist, sculptor, potter, and author. After teaching sculpture for twenty years in Flint, MI, she moved to Worcester, where she maintains a studio. Recent exhibitions include one-person shows at the Danforth Museum of Art and ArtsWorcester, where she received the Present Tense Prize for innovative use of materials. She has works in the collection of the MCA in Chicago, and The Mattress Factory Museum in Pittsburgh. She received her MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
