Learn how to decode a firefly’s signals and what can be done to protect them in a new Gardening for Life talk at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History. Plymouth County Entomologist Blake Dinius joins us for the Secret World of Fireflies, on Sunday, March 22, 2026 at 1:00pm.

Hosted by Janice Donovan, manager of the historic Shirley G Cross Wildflower Garden, Blake will explain the mysteries behind the insect’s biology and ecology, including what they’re really doing when they light up our yards at night. He’ll also tell us about threats facing the estimated 170 varieties in North America, as well as how to protect them.

The presentation is the last in Museum’s popular Gardening for Life, which is an annual series bringing experts across a range of fields to speak to hobbyists and professionals. Previous topics included how to prepare for spring, attracting birds to your yard, and how to identify invading species.
