Kathia Alves was born into a family with no economic conditions in Brazil, since she was eleven years old she dreamed of being a seamstress and making her own clothes. Her parents had no money to pay for sewing classes, but they informed her of a church very far from their home that provided free classes.
At twelve years old, she decided to travel to that town and follow her dream. She remembers that when she was still a child, the director of the program Paulo Sendeas handed Kathia her diploma. He was in tears at the sight of a child so willing to learn. That was the first time she had ever seen an adult cry.
Later, about six years later, she became a designer at the company 'Ananda' for over 30 years. Full circle as he had given her the diploma! The truth is, she had dreamed of becoming a seamstress, but her boss Ceci Sendas discovered that she was an artist, when Kathia had no idea of what it was to be an artist.
Time passed and she moved to Ibiza, Spain, when she was twenty-three years old. That was where she developed the skills for all the art that was within her. Painting clothes was her first work of art. Painting flowers, characterizes her work, embroidering flowers, crocheted flowers, small and large, attention-grabbing ones. Handiwork has been a huge part of Kathia’s life. For seven years she was the designer in Ibiza. After a life outside Brazil, she no longer felt at home. She stayed for a year and seven months, that's when she decided to immigrate to the United States, where she heard that Americans like worldly responsible people and value art. Also where she would learn a new language, where she could take her art, craftsmanship and her history in sustainable fashion.

Katia made her way to Hyannis, Massachusetts where she enjoys a new life. The beginning was difficult but today she already does what she loves with a lot of effort. She purchased her sewing machine to continue what she started in Brazil and developed in Spain. She loves what she does.

Katia loves to be sustainable, she loves to embroider, create. Transforming what has no value into a work of art, she loves all classes of handicrafts, painting, sewing, and especially making something unique and socially responsible. In her life, handicrafts helped her overcome depression, the scars of mistreatment, sustainability gave her financial independence, and she was able to raise her twin daughters who are now twenty-three years old, who also love what she does. Art for her is one of the greatest therapies, it helps us to express what we feel, connects us to such simple things in life that make us happy.
The art of crafting should be a part of many people's lives because it works on their mind, and develops their physique, promotes connection with what really matters. Art and craftsmanship for her is life and health, medicine and healing.
