The Cotuit Library was founded in 1874 by the Cotu

The Cotuit Library was founded in 1874 by the Cotuit Lyceum Society. Its first permanent home was in the present entrance room, a former school house built in 1830 and acquired for the library in 1894. Through the years the following expansions have allowed the collection to grow: the Guy Lowell addition in 1901, the Richard Gallagher addition in 1963, and the Kirkman Extension (Phillip Minervino, Architect) in 1977. The Library is owned and managed by the Cotuit Library Association with contributions from the community, special fundraising and the Town of Barnstable. We are a member of the Cape Libraries Automated Materials Sharing (CLAMS) network and the Cape and Islands Inter-Library Association.

The Cahoon Museum

The stately Colonial Georgian home that constitutes the original part of the museum was built between 1775 and 1782 by early Cotuit resident, Zenas Crocker. By 1821, his grandson Ezra Crocker was operating the place as a tavern, an important overnight stop on the stagecoach line between Sandwich and Hyannis. Many of the building’s period details are still intact.

The building continued under Crocker ownership for five generations until the 1920s. In 1945, artists Ralph and Martha Cahoon purchased the house to use as their residence and studio, using many of the rooms for the display of their painted furniture and antiques. Following Ralph’s death in 1982, local art collector Rosemary Rapp purchased the house with a vision of opening a museum; her dream was realized in 1984 with the founding of the Cahoon Museum of American Art.

Between 2014 and 2015, the Cahoon Museum underwent a major renovation of its historic building and added a new addition while operating offsite at a temporary location. The Museum reopened in May 2016, with an additional 3,600 square feet of new space, doubling its exhibition space and giving enhanced access to the Museum’s collections, as well as providing more space for programs that serve the community.

Let's paddle on over to the next of the 7 villages of Barnstable. We are now moving to our next village...yes this is number 5. Let's zip trip it over Cotuit (02635).

Cotuit is among the smallest of the seven Barnstable villages, covering about 5 square miles. The major part of the village is surrounded on three sides by water: Popponesset Bay, Cotuit Bay, and Santuit River. The village is characterized by its rustic charm and a laid back atmosphere.

Sampson’s island (accessible by boat or Kayak) is a wildlife sanctuary. Most of the district is residential, heavily populated by homes of significant historic and architectural importance. The Village also includes Cotuit Library and Memorial Park, Bruce Hall of The Cotuit Federated Church, Freedom Hall, Mariners Hall, and the Historical Society/Samuel Doddridge House, and Lowell Park, home of the Cotuit Kettleers.

A small post office, a nine-hole golf course, quaint village grocery store, an oyster company (world-famous Cotuit oysters), a local bar and restaurant and a handful of other small businesses adds to Cotuit’s charm. The Santuit district, the original village center, runs along Route 28 and is an eclectic mix of family-owned and occupied businesses, along with the jewels of the area, the Cahoon Art Museum and the Cotuit Center for the Arts.
