APPLICATIONS FOR 2026 Shanty Season

ARTISTS

Artists applying must be a Cape Cod resident spending at least six months a year at their Cape Cod address as their primary residence.

Artists may be asked to submit proof of residency.

Work must be original handmade or hand-designed.

Multiple artists may share a shanty but they all must separately apply and be accepted.
Artists sharing the shanties shall coordinate payments and submit ONE check as deposit and ONE as balance due.

Artists who request specific locations on the application will NOT have be considered to participate for the upcoming season.  This is one program, two locations, just steps away from one another.  Artists are first assigned dates and once dates accepted, locations are assigned.

APPLICATIONS AND TIMELINE

  • Each year, applications for the upcoming year are accepted starting October 15
    • FIRST REVIEW of all applications received begins January 15
    • Advantage of applying early:
      Artists who submit applications by January 15 are notified no later than February 15
  • Applications CONTINUE TO BE ACCEPTED ON A ROLLING BASIS until all spots are filled

PLEASE NOTE:   There is a rolling application/jury process for any remaining openings and artists are encouraged to always submit an application to be considered for the current season as spots do not fill during the first review of applications.

Artists will always receive an auto confirmation their application has been received.

From October 15 through January 15 of each year, all applicants who submit applications during this time frame will be notified of their  acceptance status no later than February 15.

As of January 16, all applications received, artists will be notified of acceptance status by email within 8 weeks of receiving your application.

This is a rolling application/jury process and WE CONTINUE TO ACCEPT AND REVIEW APPLICATIONS UNTIL ALL SPOTS ARE FILLED.

Once your application has been reviewed, you  will receive an email indicating one of the following:

>>Notified you have been accepted into the program for the current year and dates for when you will receive assigned rental dates. Subject line in email will read:  "Congratulations"

>>Notified you have not been accepted into the program and you will receive an email reply to your application with subject line, "status update"

>>Notified through email reply with subject line" more info requested" if the committee requests to see additional work before making a decision. We will reach out and set up a convenient time for you to share your work.

SELECTION PROCESS

Each year is a new year; prior participation does not mean automatic acceptance into the program.

Amount of time allotted for each artist varies from year to year.

Each artist’s application is juried/reviewed and evaluated by committee in order to ensure the quality and variety of work offered. In some cases, artists are asked to come in person to present their work to the review committee. Once accepted into the program, any items not approved during the jury process must be approved by the Town of Barnstable's Arts and Culture Coordinator prior to selling in the shanty. Artists must complete an application and be juried/accepted into the program on a yearly basis.

Work must be original handmade, hand-crafted or hand-designed.

CONTRACT & PAYMENT TERMS

    • No refunds
    • 50% or full amount of rental fee PLUS separate security deposit check due with the signed license agreement, balance due within four weeks
    • Artists accepted into the program after April 30 will send in full payment within one week of their acceptance date

2026 LICENSE FEES

May Weekends: Friday - Sunday & open Monday, Memorial Day $155 $85
June Weekends: Friday through Sunday $155 $85
June weeks: 7 days a week begins 6/22/26 $285 $125
July & August: 7 days a week through Labor Day, 9/7/26 $285 $125
September, 5 days a week, starting 9/10 through 9/28 $265 $100
October Weekends: Fri - Sun, 10/2 - 10/11 $155 $85

SECURITY DEPOSIT

$50.00 (refundable) security deposit due with the signed contract. This is in addition to your rental fee check. This deposit check will be voided at the end of the season if shanty is left 'nail-free' and clean and keys and parking passes are returned.

INSURANCE

All artists are required to carry commercial general liability insurance. You must submit a Certificate of Insurance naming Town of Barnstable as an additional insured due with your signed contract. There are many reasonably priced options for artists participating in venues such as the shanties and other festivals and fairs as stand-alone short-term policy, or as a rider on your homeowners or business owners insurance.

May 15 - June 21 11:00am -4:00pm
MEMORIAL DAY, Monday, May 25 11:00am-4:00pm
SEVEN DAYS A WEEK:
June 22 to June 28 11:00am - 5:00pm
June 29 - August 23 11:00am - 8:00pm
August 24- August 30 11:00am - 5:00pm
August 31- September 7 including Labor Day 11:00am -5:00pm
FIVE DAYS A WEEK:
Sept. 10- Sept. 28 Thurs - Mon; 11:00am-5:00pm
FALL WEEKENDS: Friday-Sunday
10/2 - 10/11 Fri-Sun; 11:00am-4:00pm

EVERYTHING ELSE

Town of Barnstable's Arts and Culture Coordinator will send information to participating artists on everything needed for a successful shanty stay from how to unlock the shanty doors to shanty sales and marketing advice.

Every accepted artist is emailed information before the season starts.  There is a pre-season artist  meeting in the spring to answer any further questions and visit the shanties to take pictures and measurements.

Artists frequently come in early and stay late beyond set program hours.
Always open from 11:00am, closing times change based on the time of year:

MOSTLY:
May, June weekends open until at least 4:00pm
Early June week, open until at least 5:00pm
Late June, July & August, open until at least 8:00pm
Last week of August, open until at least 5:00pm
September, open until at least 5:00pm.
October weekends, open until at least 4:00pm.

SPECIFIC:
As of Monday, June 29, 2026, closing hours are until at least 8:00 pm

As of Monday, August 24, 2026, closing hours are until at least 5:00pm

MANY ARTISTS OPEN EARLY & STAY LATE OUTSIDE OF DESIGNATED PROGRAM HOURS!
