DESCRIPTION:Naturescape Gallery at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History presents\nFlora by artist Katherine Nora\, February 14 – April 30\, 2026\, during Museum open hours. \nArtist’s statement: \nFor the last twenty years most of my painting has been a response to what is growing in the land around me. Whether from direct contact with my garden or the woods surrounding it\, a glimpse of roadside scene or even the memory of a dream\, the urge is the same: to capture that plant-action. I see personalities\, communication\, or simply grace\, dignity and wisdom. To satisfy my curiosity and capture these qualities\, I wait for the painting to tell me what it wants and allow my participation in the gestures of the natural world. \nKatherine Nora has lived on Cape Cod for most of her life and shown her work here for decades. She is known for depicting the natural world with bold colors and strong brush strokes. And if you are in Orleans having a coffee at the Hot Chocolate Sparrow\, look towards the CVS building and you will see the incredible “Depot Mural” that depicts the “Yesterday-Year Railroad Station” by artists Katherine Nora and Dan Joy. SUMMARY:John Hay & the Archaeology of Cape Cod -A Talk and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:The pioneering work of our co-founder\, John Hay\, to protect Cape Cod’s native heritage is being revealed in a special presentation at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History by one of his closest colleagues on March 26\, 2026  at 1:00pm. \nDr Fred Dunford’s “Inseparable from Nature: John Hay and the Archaeology of Cape Cod” will also support the fundraising campaign to build a permanent memorial to Hay on the Museum’s grounds\, expected to be unveiled in September. \nJohn Hay started the Museum’s Archaeology Program in the 1980s\, hiring Dr Dunford to lead teams recovering evidence of native peoples and others who lived on lands including Wing Island\, behind the Museum’s building in Brewster\, thousands of years ago. \n“When John and others gathered to establish the museum in 1954\, Hay saw a landscape that was rapidly changing\, both environments and local histories were being lost\,” said Dr Dunford. “Hay initiated and supported the development of archaeology at the museum in 1982\, and for the next 21 years students and volunteers sought to recover and preserve evidence of those who have occupied this fragile land from time immemorial.” \nThe work was published in the 1997 book “Secrets in the Sand\,” written by Dr Dunford and local journalist Greg O’Brien with a foreword by John Hay who wrote: “Changing geography and changing patterns of living are revealed during the course of an archaeological dig. We also come closer to understanding the values of native people whose lives were inseparable from nature itself”. \nThe 45-minute presentation will include rarely seen photographs and items from the Museum’s archive and be followed by a Q&A session. There will also be an opportunity to view designs by Cape Cod artist Steve Kemp for the John Hay Memorial\, which is inspired by his classic nature book ‘The Run’\, published in 1959 and still on sale today. \nThe presentation is part of the Museum’s Silver Science Series\, which offers discounts to those aged 60+. A portion of proceeds from the event will go towards the Hay Memorial Fund.

Plymouth County Entomologist Blake Dinius joins us for the Secret World of Fireflies\, on Sunday\, March 22\, 2026 at 1:00pm. \nHosted by Janice Donovan\, manager of the historic Shirley G Cross Wildflower Garden\, Blake will explain the mysteries behind the insect’s biology and ecology\, including what they’re really doing when they light up our yards at night. He’ll also tell us about threats facing the estimated 170 varieties in North America\, as well as how to protect them. \nThe presentation is the last in Museum’s popular Gardening for Life\, which is an annual series bringing experts across a range of fields to speak to hobbyists and professionals. DESCRIPTION:PRESENTATION and Q&A\nWednesday\, March 11\, 2026\, 1:00pm\nCape Cod Museum of Natural History \nOnce a ‘pest’\, now an icon\, the importance of Cape Cod’s horseshoe crabs is being revealed in a Silver Science presentation at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History on Wednesday\, March 11\, at 1:00pm. \nMaureen Ward\, the Museum’s Horseshoe Crab Aquaculture and Nursery program lead\, will take the audience through how the 450-million-year-old ‘living fossil’ has become an invaluable resource for species both below and above the water. \n“There’s a surprising number of coastal and marine animals living along our shorelines\, in our water habitats\, and flying overhead that have come to depend on horseshoe crabs as a food resource\,” Maureen said. “We’ll also be talking about how they enrich the seafloor and expand biodiversity.” \nFollowing the presentation there will be a Q&A session with opportunities to view live juvenile horseshoe crabs and receive updates on MA legislation proposing to ban the taking of the species for bait and MA Division of Marine Fisheries proposals to change quotas for bait and biomedical harvest. \n2026 marks the 10th anniversary of the Museum’s Horseshoe Carb Aquaculture and Nursery Education Program\, which promotes stewardship\, advocacy and education. Our International Horseshoe Crab Day Celebration is one of the museum’s most popular annual events with hundreds of people coming for special exhibits every June 19th. \nSilver Science is a series of presentations by leading figures across a range of disciplines\, with discounted tickets for those aged 60+. Upcoming speakers include archaeologist Dr Fred Dunford on the work of our co-founder John Hay to preserve the history of the Cape’s Native people\, and WHOI scientist Dr Kirstin Meyer-Kaiser on biodiversity on shipwrecks. She loves to visit gardens and historic sites and share her trips through photos and prose. She also lectures at flower shows\, horticultural societies\, garden clubs\, and libraries in the Northeast. \nJana published her first book\, The Garden Tourist: 120 Destination Gardens and Nurseries in the Northeast in 2018. Her second book\, The Garden Tourist’s New England\, features notable private gardens and off-the-beaten-path destinations for passionate gardeners. She is also owner of Enchanted Gardens\, a landscape design firm in the Boston area. \nGardening for Life is an annual series at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History that brings experts across a range of fields to speak to hobbyists and professionals. Fran will also explain how helping local birdlife can reduce your own garden chores\, including having to water less\, and maintain local ecosystems. \nFran Raleigh grew up watching birds and nature in her Northern VA neighborhood. She began getting to know wild plants while earning her BS in Biology at Marietta College in OH\, and continued botanizing during grad school at SUNY-ESF in Syracuse\, where she earned MS and PhD degrees in Plant Science. A long-time visitor to Cape Cod\, she moved here permanently on her retirement. \nGardening for Life is an annual series at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History that brings experts across a range of fields to speak to hobbyists and professionals. DESCRIPTION:Naturescape Gallery at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History presents\nFlora by artist Katherine Nora\, February 14 – April 30\, 2026\, during Museum open hours. \nArtist’s statement: \nFor the last twenty years most of my painting has been a response to what is growing in the land around me. Whether from direct contact with my garden or the woods surrounding it\, a glimpse of roadside scene or even the memory of a dream\, the urge is the same: to capture that plant-action. I see personalities\, communication\, or simply grace\, dignity and wisdom. To satisfy my curiosity and capture these qualities\, I wait for the painting to tell me what it wants and allow my participation in the gestures of the natural world. \nKatherine Nora has lived on Cape Cod for most of her life and shown her work here for decades. She is known for depicting the natural world with bold colors and strong brush strokes. And if you are in Orleans having a coffee at the Hot Chocolate Sparrow\, look towards the CVS building and you will see the incredible “Depot Mural” that depicts the “Yesterday-Year Railroad Station” by artists Katherine Nora and Dan Joy.
