SUMMARY:Vampires of New England at CC Museum of Natural History
DESCRIPTION:Intriguing fresh evidence connected to New England’s infamous ‘Vampire Panic’ in the 18th century will be revealed in a Halloween talk at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster on Thursday\, October 30\, 2025\, at 1:00pm. \nMedievalist and storyteller\, Susan Jarek-Glidden’s new talk will include a case from Connecticut River Valley\, said to have taken place in 1725 and only discovered last year. She will also be discussing the recent finding of an unusually patterned quilt reputed to have belonged to one of the area’s best known ‘vampires’. \nAround 20 cases of ‘vampirism’ are known to have been documented in a wave of panic that gripped the area in the 17 and 1800s. Spreading from Rhode Island\, it became a region-wide phenomenon throughout Connecticut\, southern and western Massachusetts\, Vermont\, and other areas. \nSusan will be telling the true tales that fueled the folklore in an atmospheric and fascinating session exploring a period of history that followed the better known Salem Witch Trials. \nFree with Museum Admission\nFor more information please call: 508-896-3867\, ext. 133

SUMMARY:Nature Screen presents: Snowy Owl Double Feature
DESCRIPTION:Nature Screen presents: Snowy Owl Double Feature \nThursday\, October 16 at 11:30am. \nCape Cod Museum of Natural History \nNature Screen at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster presents a double feature: Snowy Owls of Logan Airport\, an award-winning\, short-form documentary & Magic of the Snowy Owl an original PBS NATURE Documentary on Thursday\, October 16 at 11:30am. \nSnowy Owls of Logan Airport (9 minutes): Norman Smith has dedicated his life to protecting and relocating the snowy owls from Boston’s busiest airport runways. Called “the Owl Man of Logan Airport\,” Smith has single-handedly relocated more than 900 snowy owls\, creating the blueprint for how airports across the US and Canada can manage wildlife conflict. Anna Miller’s short form documentary is the recipient of the 2025 American Conservation Film Festival’s Audience Choice Award\, the 2025 New Bedford Film Festival’s Best Documentary Short Award\, and the 2024 Mystic Film Festival’s Best New England Film Award\, among others. \nMagic of the Snowy Owl (60 minutes): Though “snowies” naturally stand out for their beauty\, intelligence\, and charm\, in their eerie\, bleak Arctic home\, it is their determination and survival skills that are truly magical. Throughout the long months of the Arctic winter\, life is difficult\, if not impossible\, for all but the toughest and most experienced of animals. Snowy owls are built for the challenge\, their every sense and skill honed to take on their frozen world. Then\, the brief Arctic summer approaches\, bringing light back to the tundra\, and they embark upon an even more daunting challenge than keeping themselves alive: breeding and raising young in one of the harshest environments on the planet. Once summer arrives\, they will have just 82 days of sunlight to successfully raise a family of helpless owlets until they are ready and able to fly. \nIncluded with Museum Admission\nFor more information please call: 508-896-3867\, ext. 133
