Whether from direct contact with my garden or the woods surrounding it\, a glimpse of roadside scene or even the memory of a dream\, the urge is the same: to capture that plant-action. I see personalities\, communication\, or simply grace\, dignity and wisdom. To satisfy my curiosity and capture these qualities\, I wait for the painting to tell me what it wants and allow my participation in the gestures of the natural world. \nKatherine Nora has lived on Cape Cod for most of her life and shown her work here for decades. She is known for depicting the natural world with bold colors and strong brush strokes. And if you are in Orleans having a coffee at the Hot Chocolate Sparrow\, look towards the CVS building and you will see the incredible “Depot Mural” that depicts the “Yesterday-Year Railroad Station” by artists Katherine Nora and Dan Joy. DESCRIPTION:Bring the Cape’s most beautiful\, fascinating — and sometimes dramatic –birds to your own back yard with tips and tricks from master gardener Fran Raleigh at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History on Sunday\, March 1 at 1:00pm\, 2026. \nThe botanist\, ecologist and birder will join host Janice Donovan\, manager of the historic Shirley G Cross Wildflower Garden\, for a presentation on native plants that can attract year-round and migrating birds. Fran will also explain how helping local birdlife can reduce your own garden chores\, including having to water less\, and maintain local ecosystems. \nFran Raleigh grew up watching birds and nature in her Northern VA neighborhood. She began getting to know wild plants while earning her BS in Biology at Marietta College in OH\, and continued botanizing during grad school at SUNY-ESF in Syracuse\, where she earned MS and PhD degrees in Plant Science. A long-time visitor to Cape Cod\, she moved here permanently on her retirement. \nGardening for Life is an annual series at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History that brings experts across a range of fields to speak to hobbyists and professionals. Upcoming topics include spring preparation and the secret world of fireflies. It honors the historic Shirley G. Cross Wildflower Garden at the Green Briar Nature Center. \nPLUS\, at every event we’ll be hosting a bake sale filled with delicious treats\, with proceeds going to support the incredible work of Brewster Pollinators.

Join horticulturalist Russ Norton for a special presentation on invasive insects as the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History launches the 2026 Gardening for Life Series on Sunday\, February 22 at 1pm. \nSpotted Lanternflies are just one of the potential pests making their way towards us that the Cape Cod Cooperative Extension (CCCE) has put on its “See? Squash it.” list. The bug hasn’t yet been found here but has been steadily creeping through Massachusetts. I see personalities\, communication\, or simply grace\, dignity and wisdom. To satisfy my curiosity and capture these qualities\, I wait for the painting to tell me what it wants and allow my participation in the gestures of the natural world. \nKatherine Nora has lived on Cape Cod for most of her life and shown her work here for decades. She is known for depicting the natural world with bold colors and strong brush strokes. And if you are in Orleans having a coffee at the Hot Chocolate Sparrow\, look towards the CVS building and you will see the incredible “Depot Mural” that depicts the “Yesterday-Year Railroad Station” by artists Katherine Nora and Dan Joy. From the mysteries of the night sky: aurora borealis\, the milky way galaxy and the stars above\, to the magical light of sunrises and sunsets that characterize the Cape we all know and love. Allie’s images reveal how light transforms the landscape and shapes our perception\, mood\, and sense of wonder. \n*Allie will be presenting a program “Photographing the Northern Lights” to complement this exhibit on Saturday\, November 8th at 1pm. She plans many of her photographs in advance paying attention to weather events\, the phases of the moon\, and uses various apps to aid her artistry. \nAllie is well-traveled; through her business BlueHour® Photo Ventures\, she guides like-minded photographers across the United States and abroad several times per year. She most enjoys teaching and sharing with others in the pursuit of art and experience. \nAllie’s work has won several awards\, including the PRC Boston Student Image Award in her college years\, and an Ambassadorship with f-stop Gear. She participates in local exhibitions at the Chatham Creative Arts Center and the Chatham Chamber of Commerce Art in the Park Event. DESCRIPTION:Naturescape Gallery at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History presents\n“Chasing the Light: Cape Cod”with photographer\, Allie Richards\nNovember 5 – December 21\, 2025\, during Museum open hours. \nThis exhibit features the photographic work of Allie Richards and explores the changing light of our natural world. It is divided into two parts: Nocturne – Cape Cod After Dark\, and Golden Hour. From the mysteries of the night sky: aurora borealis\, the milky way galaxy and the stars above\, to the magical light of sunrises and sunsets that characterize the Cape we all know and love. Allie’s images reveal how light transforms the landscape and shapes our perception\, mood\, and sense of wonder. \n*Allie will be presenting a program “Photographing the Northern Lights” to complement this exhibit on Saturday\, November 8th at 1pm.
