Through groundbreaking collaborative research\, oceanographer Caroline Ummenhofer from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Timothy Walker are uncovering how weather observations recorded aboard New England whaling vessels more than 200 years ago are now helping scientists reconstruct long-term changes in global climate and ocean wind patterns. \nTheir work draws from thousands of pages of historic whaling logbooks dating from 1790 to 1910\, preserved in the collections of the New Bedford Whaling Museum\, Nantucket Historical Association\, and Providence Public Library. It would have been the survivors who told the story of a great flood and passed down how they were descended from those who endured it. DESCRIPTION:Youth Boat Building Workshop\nSaturdays\, February 7 – Saturday\, April 25\, 2026 \nJoin us for a hands-on workshop where middle school students work together to construct a 12-foot traditional rowing skiff from a standardized boat-building kit. \n\n\nOpen to participants in grades 6–8 \n\n\n\n\nSaturdays | 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM \n\n\nRuns for 10–12 weeks \n\n\nLed by experienced and highly talented museum volunteers \n\n\nOver those 12 weeks\, the students have the helm – building their boat under the guidance of our expert volunteers. They assemble the whole boat\, design its colors\, and pick its name\, all before taking it out on the water for its first voyage\, and rowing away with a wonderful sense of accomplishment. \nSince the Youth Boat Building program was launched in 2012\, over thirty Bevin’s skiffs have been built.
