DESCRIPTION:CARMEN CICERO\nDRAWINGS AND WATERCOLORS\nTales of Intrigue\, Danger and Humor \nExhibition Dates: July 3 – October 5\, 2025\nThe exhibition is sponsored by Bob and Cathey Portrie. \nThis summer\, the Cape Cod Museum of Art is pleased to present a major exhibition featuring the art of renowned artist\, Carmen Cicero. \nCarmen Cicero has been a prominent figure for over seventy years in the New York and Cape Cod contemporary art scene. While his early work focused on Abstract Expressionism (influenced by Robert Motherwell among others)\, he was later drawn to the figurative. After a 1971 fire destroyed his New Jersey studio\, and with it\, his entire body of work\, Cicero’s art took a personal turn- combining figuration\, landscape and wit in compositions with Surrealist overtones\, a style that became emblematic of his later work’s representations and state of mind. \nCurated by acclaimed art critic\, David Ebony\, this solo exhibition will showcase works on paper in Carmen’s favorite mediums – pencil\, ink and watercolor. “We want this exhibition to be uplifting for visitors\, so we have selected many playful\, colorful works… including those with themes of music and the painting process.” says Ebony who also oversaw the production of the newly published\, monumental book Carmen Cicero Drawings and Watercolors: Tales of Intrigue\, Danger and Humor. Janie Barber\, Sam’s wife\, and Julie Tirrell\, writer and contributor to the memoir\, will also join in the discussion. \nSam Barber sees the world differently than you or I. Step into his home or studio and the dancing lights and the wondrous symphony of colors transport you to another time and place. Sam was born in Europe and came to the United States when he was four years old. He first became aware of art as a way of expressing what he saw and felt when he was about five years old. Sam went on to art school\, and people began to notice the unique qualities of his work. He was something special. Even before he began to study art formally\, Sam realized that this was all he wanted to do with his life.

DESCRIPTION:David Ebony moderates a discussion on Carmen Cicero\, now in the midst of his seventh decade in the contemporary art world of New York City. \nHis works of the 1950s—collected by the Museum of Modern Art\, the Guggenheim\, the Whitney\, and other major museums—combined the gestures of Abstract Expressionism with the complex emergent forms of Surrealist automatism. In the 1960s\, Cicero was one of the first members of the American avant-garde to return to figuration\, pursuing\, through the 1960s and 1970s\, a style called “figurative expressionism.” This evolved\, beginning in the 1990s\, into his more recent “visionary” mode\, in which he depicts\, with a startling clarity\, mysterious scenes animated by multiple contradictory feelings—unfulfilled desires\, jealousy\, despair\, and isolation—as well as a generous dose of humor.

Being open to trying new techniques and taking risks\, keeps things fresh and exciting. In this class\, we’ll concentrate on the importance of Design\, Value\, Color\, and Rhythm to make your art stronger with your personal voice! Learn to simplify and get the bones of your painting down first\, without wasting time in the beginning with unnecessary details… “ya don’t put up the curtains till the house is built”! Discover the importance of building up a surface history in your paintings\, how “taking off” is just as important as “putting on”\, as well as the magnificence of mark-making. Weekly exercises will definitely get you out of your comfort zone and give you permission to play\, explore\, and throw the concept of perfection out the back door! Bring the supplies you want to work with for the first class and we’ll take it from there. \nEd Chesnovitch\, a Cape Cod artist\, is a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and has studied extensively at The Art Students League of New York\, and the Cape Cod School of Art\, Provincetown\, Massachusetts. He is an elected Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America (PSA) in Gramercy Park\, New York City\, and both a Signature Member and past President of the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod. His work is featured in the book Contemporary Cape Cod Artists: Images of Land and Sea\, by Deborah Forman\, 2013 Schiffer Publishing\, and he was juried twice into Pastel Journal Magazine’s top 100 pastelists of the year. He is represented on Cape Cod at Left Bank Gallery\, Wellfleet and Orleans\, MA. Her deep grounding in Celtic and American roots music combines with her love for pop songwriting\, soulful vocals\, and groove-based improvisation\, making every KP performance unexpected yet familiar: a musical journey from beginning to end. SUMMARY:Gallery Talk and Opening Reception\, Sigmund M. and Mary B. Hyman Collection
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition displays 47 artworks recently acquired into the Cape Cod Museum of Art (CCMoA) Permanent Collection through the fulfillment of the Sigmund M. and Mary B. Hyman promised gift. These artworks were created by some of the most important figures in Western art history including Bonnard\, Bouché\, Chagall\, Davies\, Degas\, Giacometti\, Glackens\, Kokoschka\, Luks\, Maillol\, Matisse\, Moore\, Mucha\, Picasso\, Pène du Bois\, Renoir\, Soyer\, Toulouse-Lautrec\, Whorf\, and Wiggins\, among others. \nMary Bloom Hyman (1927-2024) was born and grew up on Cape Cod. She married the love of her life Sigmund “Sig” Hyman (1921-2002) of Baltimore\, and together the couple chose Stevenson\, Maryland as their residence. Even though Mary lived in Maryland most of her adult life\, she visited Cape Cod regularly and always made time to stop at the Cape Cod Museum of Art to chat with the staff and check on the museum’s progress.

While his early work focused on Abstract Expressionism (influenced by Robert Motherwell among others)\, he was later drawn to the figurative. After a 1971 fire destroyed his New Jersey studio\, and with it\, his entire body of work\, Cicero’s art took a personal turn- combining figuration\, landscape and wit in compositions with Surrealist overtones\, a style that became emblematic of his later work’s representations and state of mind. \nCurated by acclaimed art critic\, David Ebony\, this solo exhibition will showcase works on paper in Carmen’s favorite mediums – pencil\, ink and watercolor. “We want this exhibition to be uplifting for visitors\, so we have selected many playful\, colorful works… including those with themes of music and the painting process.” says Ebony who also oversaw the production of the newly published\, monumental book Carmen Cicero Drawings and Watercolors: Tales of Intrigue\, Danger and Humor. She is a third-year Harvard/New England Conservatory Dual Degree candidate\, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in History of Art and Architecture at Harvard as well as a Cello Performance master’s degree at NEC in the studio of Paul Katz. Elizabeth is a graduate of Greens Farms Academy and The Juilliard School Pre-College\, where she was a student of Amy Barston. Elizabeth received Grand Prix at the Concert Festival International Competition and First Prizes at the American Fine Arts Festival and Golden Key Music Festival. She has served as principal cellist of the Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra and Juilliard Pre-College Orchestra; and has performed at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall\, Lincoln Center’s Bruno Walter Hall\, Juilliard’s Paul Hall\, Paine Concert Hall\, and Symphony Space. She has participated in Bowdoin International Music Festival\, Philadelphia International Music Festival\, Burgos International Music Festival and Sitka International Cello Seminar. Elizabeth has also received training as a conductor at Juilliard Pre-College and at the Valissima Institute for Orchestral Conducting. Most recently\, Elizabeth has made her solo debut with the American Chamber Orchestra\, performing the Elgar Cello Concerto.

SUMMARY:Take It Away with Monet! with Jennifer Stratton (Ages 6-11)
DESCRIPTION:In this week-long class\, students will create wonderful pieces of art through drawing\, painting\, collage\, 3D art\, clay\, and more with CCMoA youth art instructor Jennifer Stratton. CCMoA youth art instructor Jennifer Stratton inspires and introduces young artists to well-known masters like Monet and others. Using a variety of mediums students will engage in different art projects including painting\, drawing\, and collage.
