Marstons Mills

Marstons Mills is one of the more rural of the Barnstable villages. Early settlers here were farmers, craftsman, and millers who were attracted to better soils found in the village.

The Marstons family for whom the village is named were owners of one of the mills located along what is known today as the Marstons Mills River. You can pass by the site of a fulling mill (which cleaned wool) in the late 1600s and later a grist mill that operated into the early 1900s.

The William Marstons house sits on a rise overlooking Mill Pond, a tribute to the profitability of milling. Most of the other historic houses remaining today are farmhouses scattered throughout the village, modest in scale with simple clean lines and elegantly proportioned roofs, windows and doors.

The center of the village has retained its traditional uses – a store has existed on the site of the Cash market for more than one hundred years. Three community buildings, the library, Liberty Hall and the Methodist church, form a little community center off the main commercial center of the village, but many of the buildings in the village center have been rebuilt and the remaining historic structures within the village center are scattered.

Burgess Park is a popular park for a wide variety of activities including disc golf. Near one of the town’s two golf courses, Olde Barnstable, is Cape Cod Airfield, which dates back to the 1920s.

On Saturday, October 12, our film will be “Their Finest” (2016). During the Battle of Britain and the London Blitz, a group from the British Ministry of Information is charged with making a propaganda film about the Dunkirk evacuation. With men away at war many traditional male working roles are filled by women. Described as “A delightfully nostalgic period drama of movie-making and romance during the London Blitz”; “...a brilliant little film about making a film under duress and how all members of the film crew—stars to stuntmen and cameramen—interact.”; “There is humor and pathos, intrigue and great courage, hardships and sacrifices, all set during the siege of London.”; “Wonderful film that leaves you smiling and warm inside.” After the movie our film critic, Anthony Ambrogio, will lead a discussion that will leave you smiling and warm inside. .

Our upcoming Winter Arts Exhibit "Heroes and Villians" will kick off the start of 2020! This year’s juror panel features a Hollywood lead conceptual artist, renowned painter, and Broadway costume designer.

Our Juror Spotlight this week is Toni Spadafora-Sadler. Toni began her career as a costume designer after graduating with an MFA from New York University. She went on to work in regional theatre, on Broadway, opera, commercials, television, and film. She has also worked in the fashion industry - managing the Los Angeles sample workroom for Bob Mackie as well as being a senior designer for retailers Chico’s and Lane Bryant. Toni has a passion for the art of collage and continues to design costumes for the stage, currently working with Trinity Rep in Providence, RI. on a new stage adaptation of Dicken’s “Tale of Two Cities” opening in February 2020. She also designs and makes a line of gender-neutral clothing for children.

If you are an artist living or working on Cape Cod, see link in bio on how you can submit your artwork to the upcoming Heros and Villains exhibit! Deadline for submissions is November 11th, 2019. #heroesandvillains #cotuitcenterforthearts #juriedartshow #tonispadaforasadler #art
