Visitor Parking:
Park and Walk! Get your steps in with ease, all the sites and sounds in HyArts Cultural District are just steps away from the Town Hall free (up to six hours) parking lot as well as the metered lots in the HyArts Cultural District.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Cost:
The HyArts Artist Shanties are free to browse. Most artists accept either cash or credit card, but each has their own policies so be prepared.

ATMS & Banks:
ATMs by ticket office near Spanky's and next to Hy-Line Ferry
Several banks are within walking distance along Main Street including TD Bank, Bank of Cape Cod, Rockland Trust, Santander, Bank of America

Public Restrooms:
Bismore Park: Visitor Center, Open daily

Harbor Overlook: Town Comfort Stations - Barnstable Town Hall Parking Lot, Open daily

Dining:
There are over 40 restaurants along Main Street and several overlooking Hyannis Inner Harbor. Both shanty locations have picnic tables, Adirondack chairs and plenty of grass for spreading a picnic blanket.

Public Art: Then and Now, Tales of the Sea and Oysters
Each shanty at Bismore Park is named for one of the seven villages in the Town of Barnstable. The exteriors of each shanty feature photographs from each of the town of Barnstable's seven villages. Visitors will also see a large mural at the end of the shanty walkway and by the Greeter Island, large scale garden 'Oysters'.

ABOUT:

This Town run program provides affordable rental space for Cape Cod artists and artisans to work and sell at these "seaside studios". This program provides prime visibility and opportunities for artists to gain and improve business, marketing and selling skills, connect with other artists and meet visitors from around the region and the world.

The Bismore Park Shanties are named for the town's seven villages and each shanty exterior features past and present images of the town of Barnstable's seven villages. The Harbor Overlook shanties are named for Town of Barnstable beaches: Sandy Neck Beach, Craigville and Keyes.

HyArts Artist Shanty History and Mission

In 2005, the Town of Barnstable designed and built a boardwalk and installed seven artist shanties at Bismore Park, Ocean Street, Hyannis, to serve as affordable, unique studio and gallery space for local artists and artisans. The shanty program, an integral component of the Hyannis HyArts Cultural District spring through fall program, has flourished and continues to grow each year, garnering overwhelmingly positive feedback from both the arts community and residents and visitors.

Since it’s inception this arts program has been a successful venue for participating artists. In the first season, 11 artists participated in this artist incubator program, currently over 95 participate each year. In 14 seasons (through 2018) the collective earnings of more than 700 artists are over one million dollars.

The program is designed to support arts and culture in downtown Hyannis with the ultimate goal of increasing visitors to the harbor area and downtown. Over 850,000 visitors have visited the shanties since 2005.

Through prior funding from the Massachusetts Cultural Council Adams Grant and programming support from our Hyannis HyArts Cultural District partners, hundreds of artists have enjoyed increased sales and recognition through their participation in the artist shanty program.

The success of this program continues today, and we thank local and regional media outlets and our cultural district partners including the Hyannis Main Street Business Improvement District (BID), Cape Cod Art Center (CCAC), Arts Foundation of Cape Cod (AFCC), Cape Cod Maritime Museum, the Greater Hyannis Chamber of Commerce, and value the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce promotional support.
