SUMMARY:History on Tap: Early Nautical Charts of Cape Cod and the Northeast
DESCRIPTION:“Join Bob Zaremba\, owner of Maps of Antiquity in Chatham\, for an illustrated journey through the early nautical charts of Cape Cod and the Northeast. Housed in a historic late-1700s Chatham farmhouse\, Maps of Antiquity offers over 15\,000 antique maps\, charts\, and prints\, spanning early American maps\, hand-colored 19th-century state and country maps\, historical prints\, and more. \nIn this talk\, Bob will showcase rare and fascinating charts that guided mariners along Cape Cod and the Northeast\, explore their history\, and share insights from his decades of expertise in antique maps\, restoration\, and conservation. Navigate the history of nautical charts of Cape Cod from Samuel de Champlain to our own local chart makers George Eldridge and his son George W. Eldridge\, of Chatham. Learn about the development of American chart making from after the revolution to the 20th Century. This is a must-see for anyone interested in maritime history\, navigation\, or the story of early American chart making! \nPart of our History on Tap series—join us for an evening of local history\, conversation\, and craft brews. \nAdmission: $10 per person / $5 for members \nMust be 21+ to sample beer; IDs will be checked at the door. \nEnjoy craft beer from our sponsor\, Cape Cod Beer\, along with cheese\, crackers\, water\, and non-alcoholic beer options. \nWe highly recommend reserving your tickets on our website in advance. SUMMARY:‘The Sinking of the SS Pendleton’ presented by Reid Oslin\, Coast Guard Auxiliary
DESCRIPTION:THE COAST GUARD’S GREATEST SMALL BOAT RESCUE \nOn February 18\, 1952\, four courageous crew members from U.S. Coast Guard Station\nChatham\, launched a 36-foot wooden motor lifeboat into the teeth of a raging Nor’east storm to\nrescue sailors stranded on a stricken tanker\, SS PENDLETON\, that had broken in half and was\ndrifting off Monomoy Island.\nBattling 40-foot waves\, freezing temperatures and dangerous shoals\, the Coast Guardsmen were\nable to save 32 of the 33 crew members aboard PENDLETON and safely return them to\nChatham – a feat that is still considered to be the greatest small boat rescue in Coast Guard\nhistory.\nThe PENDLETON rescue mission was highlighted in the best-selling book\, The Finest Hours\,\nwritten by famed Cape Cod author Casey Sherman\, and later was made into a Disney-produced\nfeature-length move of the same name.\nThe four crew members\, led by Massachusetts native Bernie Webber\, each received the Gold\nLifesaving Award – the Coast Guard’s highest individual honor – for their heroic efforts on that\nfateful Cape Cod night.\nCoast Guard Auxiliary member Reid Oslin\, a Cape Cod resident\, has done extensive research\non the PENDLETON rescue and has shared the fascinating story with numerous groups\nthroughout the area. \nFor more information or to register for this event\, please contact Amy Wolfe at awolfe@clamsnet.org or by calling the OVL directly at (508)428-5757
