SUMMARY:Outside Straight Lines II: A Celebration of LGBTQ Artists on the Cape
DESCRIPTION:Outside Straight Lines II: A Celebration of LGBTQ+ Artists is a community art exhibit held at Cotuit Center for the Arts during Pride month aimed toward giving voice to LGBTQ+ arts across Cape Cod.\nEXHIBIT: May 23 to June 21\, 2026\nOPENING RECEPTION: May 30\, 2026 from 3pm to 5pm. \nOutside Straight Lines II: A Celebration of LGBTQ+ Artists is a community art exhibit held at Cotuit Center for the Arts during Pride month aimed toward giving voice to LGBTQ+ arts across Cape Cod. Artists such as Joerg Dressler\, Beth Faherty\, Fran O’Neill\, and Paul Rizzo\, among many other skilled creatives\, will showcase their work at Cotuit Center for the Arts from May 23 to June 21\, 2026\, with an opening reception on May 30\, 2026 from 3pm to 5pm. \nThe Outside Straight Lines biennial exhibit arose out of concern that much of LGBTQ+ art across the Cape has been unintentionally segregated to Provincetown\, often forcing those showing their work outside of this Queer Mecca into self-censorship throughout other venues of the Cape. In a time of book banning of LGBTQ+ literature\, erasures of crosswalks\, and blatant attacks on trans rights\, this showcase has acted as an affirmation of collective LGBTQ+ expression. With support from the Mid-Cape Cultural Council\, GSAs across Cape high schools have been invited to view this powerful exhibit. \nAccording to curator David Cravenho\, “I am impressed by our LGBTQ+ Community for its strength and resilience. Growing up queer as a child and navigating life through the lens of a straight world is quite the feat.” This exhibit not only hosts 13 Queer artists in a single space but also celebrates the vast diversity of our Queer Cape Cod community–from the expressionist figure to the realistic Cape Cod landscape. Cravenho believes strongly in art’s ability to armor oneself: “Becoming an adult as an artist and putting on your survival mechanism to express your power through your work is a gift from beyond ourselves.” \nJoin artists for an opening reception on May 30\, 2026 from 3-5pm\, or drop by Cotuit Center for the Arts between May 23 and June 21\, 2026 during visiting times to view this powerful visual collection of LGBTQ+ voices. \nMark Adams \nJoerg Dressler \nBeth Faherty \nKenneth Hawkey \nMegan Hinton \nPete Hocking \nMarc Kundmann \nFran O’Neill \nPaul Rizzo \nChristopher Sousa \nAlan Trugman \nForrest Williams \nLaurence Young \nSponsored by the Mass Cultural Council and the Mid-Cape Cultural Council

SUMMARY:History on Tap: Uncovering Climate Clues From New England Whaling Ship Logbooks
DESCRIPTION:History on Tap: Uncovering Climate Clues From New England Whaling Ship Logbooks \n🗓 Thursday\, June 11th\, 2026\n🕔 5:00–6:30 PM\n📍 Cape Cod Maritime Museum \nWhat can the handwritten logbooks of 19th-century whaling ships tell us about today’s changing climate? Through groundbreaking collaborative research\, oceanographer Caroline Ummenhofer from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Timothy Walker are uncovering how weather observations recorded aboard New England whaling vessels more than 200 years ago are now helping scientists reconstruct long-term changes in global climate and ocean wind patterns. \nTheir work draws from thousands of pages of historic whaling logbooks dating from 1790 to 1910\, preserved in the collections of the New Bedford Whaling Museum\, Nantucket Historical Association\, and Providence Public Library. Written by sailors traveling across some of the most remote oceans on Earth\, these records contain daily notes on wind direction\, storms\, sea conditions\, precipitation\, and changing weather patterns—captured decades before modern meteorological instruments and satellites existed. \nBy transforming these descriptive observations into scientific climate data\, researchers are gaining new insight into historical wind systems\, ocean circulation\, and long-term environmental change. The project demonstrates how maritime history and archival research can directly contribute to modern climate science\, offering valuable context for understanding today’s rapidly changing world. \n🍺 Craft beer from our sponsor Cape Cod Beer\n🎟 $10 / $5 members | 🔞 21+ to sample beer \nTickets are limited and often sell out—register now to save your seat!\nTickets :\nhttps://capecodmaritimemuseum.org/events-and-lectures/capecodmaritimemuseum-dolphins-7jhcm \n#HistoryOnTap #CapeCodEvents #CapeCodLife #CapeCodHistory #CapeCodBeer #CapeCodMaritimeMuseum #LocalHistorians #YarmouthChamber #CapeCodCreatives #capecodchamberevents #Hyannis #Barnstable #ExploreCapeCod #LocalHistory #MuseumEvents #DrinkLocal #thingstodooncapecod #capecodlectures #artsbarnstable
