SUMMARY:Naturescape Gallery presents "Flora" exhibit featuring Artist Katherine Nora
DESCRIPTION:Naturescape Gallery at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History presents\nFlora by artist Katherine Nora\, February 14 – April 30\, 2026\, during Museum open hours. \nArtist’s statement: \nFor the last twenty years most of my painting has been a response to what is growing in the land around me. Whether from direct contact with my garden or the woods surrounding it\, a glimpse of roadside scene or even the memory of a dream\, the urge is the same: to capture that plant-action. I see personalities\, communication\, or simply grace\, dignity and wisdom. To satisfy my curiosity and capture these qualities\, I wait for the painting to tell me what it wants and allow my participation in the gestures of the natural world. \nKatherine Nora has lived on Cape Cod for most of her life and shown her work here for decades. She is known for depicting the natural world with bold colors and strong brush strokes. And if you are in Orleans having a coffee at the Hot Chocolate Sparrow\, look towards the CVS building and you will see the incredible “Depot Mural” that depicts the “Yesterday-Year Railroad Station” by artists Katherine Nora and Dan Joy. The mural is a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the train arriving in Orleans. \nA multi-talented artist\, Katherine is also the author of three novels\, two of which are historical fiction set in Orleans: Theo and Ria and Sipson’s Island; and Pepromeno\, a Greek word meaning destiny or fate\, chronicles a son’s discovery of his missing father. \nYou can view more of Katherine’s work on her Instagram page: k.nora_art\, or at\nAdorn 211 Main St\, Orleans\, MA 02653\, adorncapecod.com. \n*Included with Museum Admission \nFor more information\, please call the Museum at 508-896-3867 ext. 133.

SUMMARY:History on Tap: Stormy Seas! Understanding the Changing Ocean around Cape Cod
DESCRIPTION:“The ocean off Cape Cod is changing before our eyes—and the stakes couldn’t be higher! Cape Cod’s ocean is not standing still. Powerful shifts in the Gulf Stream and the atmospheric Jet Stream are rapidly reshaping the waters just offshore – altering temperatures\, currents\, and the very makeup of the continental shelf and slope. These changes are already affecting marine life\, commercial fishing\, and how we manage and protect our coastal waters. \nJoin Glen Gawarkiewicz\, Senior Scientist in Physical Oceanography at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution \, for a clear\, compelling look at what’s happening beneath the surface. Blending cutting-edge science with real-world impacts\, Glen will explore how ocean fronts move\, why the sea around Cape Cod is changing so quickly\, and what those changes mean for fishermen\, ecosystems\, and the future of the region. \nTo explore this\, Larry examines Mesopotamia—particularly the Marsh Arabs—and what captive Hebrews may have witnessed in Egyptian engineering\, including massive barges capable of towing two obelisks at a time along the Nile River.\nPart of our History on Tap series—join us for an evening of local history\, conversation\, and craft brews. \nAdmission: $10 per person / $5 for members \nMust be 21+ to sample beer; IDs will be checked at the door. \nEnjoy craft beer from our sponsor\, Cape Cod Beer\, along with cheese\, crackers\, water\, and non-alcoholic beer options. \nWe highly recommend reserving your tickets on our website in advance. Popular events often sell out quickly\, and we cannot always accommodate walk-ins. Don’t miss out—plan and secure your spot! “

SUMMARY:Collage Workshop with Annika Sarin and Payal Kumar
DESCRIPTION:Collage Workshop with Annika Sarin and Payal Kumar \nJuly 18\, 2026 \nJoin us at Belonging Books and The Cordial Eye for What Was Lost / Can Be Remembered — an immersive\, community-centered art exhibition and event series that explores the invisible links connecting us through collective memory\, ancestral inheritance\, and shared storytelling. \nAlongside the art exhibition by Annika Sarin and Payal Kumar\, the artists will facilitate a collage workshop. Annika and payal will facilitate a community collage workshop where participants are invited to bring family photographs to create their own family-history-based artworks. \nWe will explore the questions: who gets access to nostalgia? What happens when we examine the past together through personal family history? And what can we gain from facing the past collectively for a better shared future? \nThe art exhibition (July 17-Aug 7) features: \n* Annika Sarin\, a multidisciplinary artist who utilizes design as a tool for care\, change\, and community-building\, and\n* payal kumar\, a multidisciplinary cultural worker whose work is grounded in forms of folk art and [sub]cultural resistance. \nAlongside the exhibition\, on July 18\, we will host an author event and collage workshop. \nIn the morning (10 am)\, Gayatri Sethi\, educator\, cultural worker and author of Diaspora-ish\, will lead a conversation on Seeding Solidarity in Community. Amidst ongoing genocides and wars\, escalating violence against immigrants\, and the tightening fist of fascism\, many of us are falling into despair. Community conversation on how we seed solidarity and grow beyond this turbulent world we inhabit now is so important. “Diaspora-ish” will be available to purchase from Belonging Books. \nIn the afternoon (1 pm)\, Annika and payal will facilitate a community collage workshop where participants are invited to bring family photographs to create their own family-history-based artworks.

SUMMARY:History on Tap: Finest Kind: Tales of a Brant Rock Lobsterman
DESCRIPTION:“Author and conservationist Sandra Staples-Bortner shares the remarkable story behind her book Finest Kind: Tales of a Brant Rock Lobsterman\, inspired by her father\, Donal Staples. Raised on his lobster boats and shaped by his stories\, Sandra recounts Donal’s journey from joining the Navy at seventeen and serving in the Battle of Okinawa\, to returning home to build a life as a lobsterman in the small fishing village of Brant Rock. \nAs Donal becomes a leader in the local fishing industry\, he helps strengthen a close-knit maritime community while raising his family on the water—hauling traps\, fishing for food and fun\, and passing down the traditions of the sea. His story spans decades of change\, culminating during the COVID-19 pandemic\, when isolation in a nursing home tested his resilience but never diminished the respect of his peers or the love of his family. \nThrough personal stories and vivid recollections\, this program explores the life of a member of the Greatest Generation and the enduring values of hard work\, community\, and character — the very definition of being “the finest kind.” \nLearn more about Sandra Staples-Bortner\, author and daughter of Lobsterman Donal Staples here: https://www.sandrastaplesbortner.com/ \nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/sandra.staples.bortner/ \nPart of our History on Tap series—join us for an evening of local history\, conversation\, and craft brews.
