SUMMARY:Naturescape Gallery presents "Cartographies of Arctic Change" by Greg Fiske
DESCRIPTION:IN THE GALLERY DURING MUSEUM HOURS\, September through October 31\, 2026\nNaturescape Gallery at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History presents “Cartographies of Arctic Change” by Greg Fiske\, Director of Geospatial Technology at Woodwell Climate Research Center in Woods Hole\, September through October 2026\, during Museum hours. \nMaps are essential to telling the story of our changing world. Cartographer Greg Fiske combines science and art to create some of the most spectacular images of our home\, planet Earth. In this medium of cartography\, Greg’s work gives a birds-eye view of our world that bridges the gap between facts and emotions\, not only helping the general public to understand complex information about the impact of climate change but also assist climate scientists with the crucial visual information to address ways to combat it. \nIn his time at the Woodwell Climate Center\, Fiske and his colleague Christina Shintani\, have worked on maps detailing forest carbon in the United States\, global drought forecasts\, fire detections in the Amazon Rainforest\, and Arctic communities located on permafrost ground. \nAccording to Fiske\, “cartography isn’t one profession\, it’s a collection of professions”. A modern cartographer is a data analyst\, a statistician\, a designer\, a programmer\, a storyteller\, all rolled into one. Skills from each profession\, and a healthy curiosity about a hundred other subjects\, are required to create maps that are informative\, attention-grabbing\, and intuitive to read. \nFiske began his journey into cartography via the world of computer coding through his high school computer lab. With the guidance from mentors\, Greg later picked up other skills\, first learning how to apply coding to geospatial data and then how to display that data visually\, and as you will see in his Naturescape Gallery exhibit\, make it beautiful and attention-grabbing. \nImage Attached: \nRiver Art. This image shows elevation data from the ArcticDEM project (NGA-NSF) for the Lena River delta region of north-central Siberia. The variations in pink shades indicate how water has changed the landscape through time. \n*On Saturday\, October 17th at 1pm join Greg Fiske for his program\, “Putting Science on the Map”\, an exploration of commonly used tools and techniques for making beautiful maps\, as well as the challenges\, success stories and failures\, faced in nearly two and half decades of making maps for Woods Hole scientists.

SUMMARY:Outside Straight Lines II: A Celebration of LGBTQ Artists on the Cape
DESCRIPTION:Outside Straight Lines II: A Celebration of LGBTQ+ Artists is a community art exhibit held at Cotuit Center for the Arts during Pride month aimed toward giving voice to LGBTQ+ arts across Cape Cod.\nEXHIBIT: May 23 to June 21\, 2026\nOPENING RECEPTION: May 30\, 2026 from 3pm to 5pm. \nOutside Straight Lines II: A Celebration of LGBTQ+ Artists is a community art exhibit held at Cotuit Center for the Arts during Pride month aimed toward giving voice to LGBTQ+ arts across Cape Cod. Artists such as Joerg Dressler\, Beth Faherty\, Fran O’Neill\, and Paul Rizzo\, among many other skilled creatives\, will showcase their work at Cotuit Center for the Arts from May 23 to June 21\, 2026\, with an opening reception on May 30\, 2026 from 3pm to 5pm. \nThe Outside Straight Lines biennial exhibit arose out of concern that much of LGBTQ+ art across the Cape has been unintentionally segregated to Provincetown\, often forcing those showing their work outside of this Queer Mecca into self-censorship throughout other venues of the Cape. In a time of book banning of LGBTQ+ literature\, erasures of crosswalks\, and blatant attacks on trans rights\, this showcase has acted as an affirmation of collective LGBTQ+ expression. With support from the Mid-Cape Cultural Council\, GSAs across Cape high schools have been invited to view this powerful exhibit. \nAccording to curator David Cravenho\, “I am impressed by our LGBTQ+ Community for its strength and resilience. Growing up queer as a child and navigating life through the lens of a straight world is quite the feat.” This exhibit not only hosts 13 Queer artists in a single space but also celebrates the vast diversity of our Queer Cape Cod community–from the expressionist figure to the realistic Cape Cod landscape. Cravenho believes strongly in art’s ability to armor oneself: “Becoming an adult as an artist and putting on your survival mechanism to express your power through your work is a gift from beyond ourselves.” \nJoin artists for an opening reception on May 30\, 2026 from 3-5pm\, or drop by Cotuit Center for the Arts between May 23 and June 21\, 2026 during visiting times to view this powerful visual collection of LGBTQ+ voices. \nMark Adams \nJoerg Dressler \nBeth Faherty \nKenneth Hawkey \nMegan Hinton \nPete Hocking \nMarc Kundmann \nFran O’Neill \nPaul Rizzo \nChristopher Sousa \nAlan Trugman \nForrest Williams \nLaurence Young \nSponsored by the Mass Cultural Council and the Mid-Cape Cultural Council

SUMMARY:Coffee @ The Kennedy Museum
DESCRIPTION:Coffee @ The Kennedy Museum\nSeptember 23\, October 22\, November 5\, November 13\nLocation: JFK Hyannis Museum – Scudder Family Center for Civic Engagement (second floor)\nAttendance: In-person or via Zoom\nCost: Free to members and non-members\nRegistration: RSVP requested. Please register below. \nSeptember 23 \n\nBook Talk with Christopher Mirabile: Author of “The Holdfast” & “The Washashore” \n\n\nJoin us for Coffee @ the Kennedy Museum as we welcome back Cape author Christopher Mirabile for a discussion of the latest installment in his Silas Lopez mystery series. Set once again against the distinctive backdrop of Provincetown\, the novel follows newly appointed Police Chief Silas Lopez as the seemingly natural death of an elderly homeowner leads him into a troubling web of suspicious property deals\, missing records\, shell corporations\, and intimidation. \nOctober 22 \nThe John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum is thrilled to host renowned photographer Mark Chester at this Coffee @ The Kennedy Museum event\, where he discusses his latest book and photography project “The Bay State: A Multicultural Landscape” \nSet in the Museum’s gallery where Chester’s photographs are currently on exhibit\, he will be in conversation with Carmina Mock\, one of the featured people in his book\, to discuss both sides of Chester’s photographs—his perspective as a photographer documenting the cultural diversity of Massachusetts\, and hers as the subject and an immigrant from Spain and naturalized citizen on Cape Cod. \nJoin them as they discuss\, both from a broad and personally specific perspective\, the importance of cultural diversity in Massachusetts. They (and you) will be surrounded by 30 of Chester’s photographs drawn from a larger collection of more than 300 images depicting naturalized American citizens living in Massachusetts\, depicting them in their communities\, at work\, at play\, and even occasionally in the midst of their naturalization ceremonies. \nMeet the author\, enjoy fresh coffee and have your book signed! \nNovember 5 \n\nBook Talk with Authors Captain W. On a hazy July night in 1999\, John F. Kennedy Jr.\, his wife Carolyn\, and her sister Lauren vanished over the waters off Martha’s Vineyard–triggering a national vigil and one of the most ambitious search operations in American history. For days\, the world watched and waited. \nBut the full story of what happened after the crash has never been told–until now. \nBook signing to follow the event. \nNovember 13 \n\nCoffee @ The Kennedy Museum with Joel Nelson \n\n\nJoin us for a cup of coffee as author and historian Joel Nelson discusses his newly book Kennedy’s Only Hero: How JFK’s Obsession with Winston Churchill Defined His Presidency. \nDrawing on previously unpublished archival material\, British historian Joel tells the story of how Churchill’s career\, writings\, policies\, and even daily habits profoundly shaped the future President. Under Churchill’s influence\, Kennedy shed his early isolationism and developed the worldview that would propel him to the White House — his conviction in peace through strength\, his faith in summits\, his understanding of rhetoric\, his commitment to service and global engagement. \nNelson\, a former Kennedy Scholar and assistant editor at Foreign Affairs journal\, he currently lives in London. \nMeet the author\, enjoy fresh coffee and have your book signed!
