Come join the Cape Cod percussion community for summer drumming sessions at the bandshell on the Hyannis Town Green. Together, we’ll explore rhythms, techniques, and solo ideas from West African and diasporic music cultures. Sam Holmstock and Fugan Dineen—along with guest artists—will lead this intermediate to advanced class/session on Thursday evenings from 6:00-7:30. Drumming begins on July 1 and runs through September 2nd.
For most sessions, we’ll focus on music and rhythms from West African (Malian and Guinean) drumming ensembles comprising djembe, dun duns, bells, and shakers. Players will develop their technique while learning new approaches to djembe accompaniment and soloing; dun dun melodies, variations, and coordination; and various shaker and bell parts. We’ll get deep into familiar rhythms, explore challenging new ones, and talk about musical contexts and meanings.
Bring your drum, a limited number of instruments are available upon request (contact for info).
