Meet artist Elizabeth Whyte Schulze who will discuss the influences of her recent travels to Morocco on her latest series of baskets. Schulze was inspired by seeing the beautiful carpets in the markets of Morocco’s port cities and learning that they were woven by women artisans who were supporting their families and preserving weaving traditions. She also became fascinated by the Berber women of the Sahara who express their creativity by adorning their faces and hands with intricate tattoos. Schulze will discuss how she integrates inspirations from her lifelong travels around the world with her personal creative journey and commitment to women’s upliftment. She will bring examples of her work, explain her artistic process, and offer a demonstration of how she achieves the colorful and dynamic qualities of her basketry designs. A lifelong artist, Schulze exhibits throughout the country, holds degrees from Ohio Wesleyan University and Tufts University and is the recipient of a Fellowship from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Schulze has several of her latest Morocco inspired baskets on view in the Interwoven: Contemporary Basketry exhibition.

This program is held in conjunction with the Museum’s exhibition, Interwoven: Contemporary Basketry, and will be hosted by Education and Programs Manager Michael MacMahon.
