Slabs and Raku Firing

March 21 @ 10:00 am

This course will focus on learning to make pottery using slab construction techniques and then firing it using the exciting Raku Firing process. During the first weekend, instructor Lois Hirshberg will teach you how to construct geometric shapes with slabs to make your pieces, and then how to apply Terra Sigillata to the surfaces so that they can be burnished to a smooth finish.

On the next scheduled weekend, Lois will lead you in glazing and firing the pieces in the Raku Kiln. That’s when the excitement begins! You will take red hot, glowing pots from the kiln and then put them in a container full of combustible materials. Results will vary from turquoise to intense red/bronze to beautiful white crackle. You will also have the chance to experiment with Horse Hair Raku. The unpredictability of the process is what makes it so exciting!

The workshop is open to all levels of expertise; people with little previous clay experience are welcome.
