Photo Transfers & Emulsion Lifts with Barbara Ford Doyle

March 21 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Today’s digital methods of making transfers and emulsion lifts mimic outdated Polaroid® processes. This workshop includes pigment ink transfers to rag paper and emulsion lifts to Yupo paper. One “lift” process uses a portable photo printer. Knowledge of Photoshop is helpful, but not necessary. **After registering, students e-mail several images to the instructor for use in class.

Background: In the 1940s, Polaroid patented the instant camera with self-developing film. The Polaroid® image transfer process was accidentally discovered by a technician who left a developed dye carrier (negative) face-down on a white surface. The (positive) print also could be shaped by soaking the print in hot water to separate the photographic coating from its base, floating andlifting the emulsion to a new substrate.

*Materials fee is $15, paid to instructor, and includes:

DASS™ heavy weight Optimized Yupo paper, 100% rag printmaking papers, transfer mediums, **computer preparation of images printed to DASS™ film, product links and resourses listings.

Student Materials list: plastic kitchen cutting mats, scissors, #2 pencil, soft fan brush, blue tape, X-acto knife, Viva paper towel, clear plastic rectangular storage container (about 11x 16).

Location:  2 classes, in the Schoolhouse
