For our second exhibition at hyphen, we present the mixed-media work of Tim Moore who created gestural and varied depictions of the Buddha.
moore or less
In 2002, graphic designers Tim Moore and Jan Moscowitz—partners in both life and work—won a design competition that led them to the trip of a lifetime. As the pair traveled across Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, and Nepal, they documented their trip through journals, sketches, photographs, and interviews. Upon their return to the US, the image of the Buddha took hold in Tim as he embarked on a project to create as many Buddha depictions as he could. Although not a Buddhist himself, Tim explained “The Buddha was not teaching me about Buddhism, but teaching me to be the artist I had always wanted to be. I was listening to what he had to say and bearing witness.” The result of this project was over 100 unique Buddha works, a selection of which are in this show. Since Tim’s unexpected passing in 2005, Jan continues to share the story of that remarkable journey and Tim’s work which it inspired—work that continues to inspire us all today.
