Hyannis Film Festival Presents Actor-Comedian Kevin Flynn in Fear of Heights

  • This event has passed.

Actor and comedian Kevin Flynn takes on questions of manhood and success, as measured by his blue-collar, Irish-immigrant family, in his one-man play Fear of Heights, presented by Hyannis Film Festival at the performance and event space 529 Main in Hyannis, on Tuesday, July 27, at 7 pm. General admission, non-reserved tickets at $40 each are available via EventBrite.

Flynn tells the often funny and bittersweet story of his Irish Catholic immigrant family and their successes in America. How does he measure up to them? The men, Flynnโ€™s grandfather and father, worked in physically demanding and dangerous jobs as high-rise iron workers helping to create 20th-century New York City. Although some immigrants aspired to be lace-curtain Irish, Flynnโ€™s grandmother and mother kept their families strong and comfortable in loving, blue-collar households. For Flynn, his career on screens and stages and his life as a husband and father, at times on uncertain paths, have departed from and reaffirmed his family history.

Fear of Heights is the third solo play by Flynn exploring his family. His earlier one-man play Around the Kitchen Table was directed by Tony Award-winning actor and Tony-nominated director Judith Ivey, who continues to advise him. Flynn is currently co-producing a documentary film about the 1980s Boston comedy scene.

Moviegoers and television viewers might know Flynn from his supporting roles in the movies Me, Myself, and Irene or The Heartbreak Kid. On TV he has appeared in guest roles on Sex and The City, Law & Order, and as host of the cable television series Ultimate Collectors and Go For It! As a standup comic, Flynn has performed at Gotham Comedy Club, in regional clubs, and on casino stages. A former college and pro soccer player, heโ€™s the host of the soccer related podcast Over the Ball.

Doors open at 6:30 pm. Show starts at 7:00 pm. Open seating.
