RANGER ACTIVITIES AT SALT POND VISITOR CENTER
Friday, September 15th
11 am: “Star Storytelling” – 30 min. For generations, people everywhere have looked up at the stars with imagination and wonder. Join us to hear some constellation stories, and craft your own! Meet at the Salt Pond Visitor Center Terrace.
1 pm: “Crafting the Constellations” – 30 min. This kids’ interactive arts and crafts activity will teach everyone how to reuse common materials to create their own constellation projector to take home. Meet at the Salt Pond Visitor Center Classroom.
Saturday, September 16th
11 am: “The Space of Space” – 30 min. Space takes up a lot of space!
How much space? Let’s discover just how big things are when we scale
them down.- Meet at the Salt Pond Visitor Center for a short hike.
1 pm: “Celestial Navigation of the 1800’s” – 30 min. 19th century whalers sailed
throughout the world navigating by the sun and stars. Join us for a program describing the
tools and techniques they used. – Meet at the Salt Pond Visitor Center Classroom.
GUEST PRESENTERS AT SALT POND VISITOR CENTER AUDITORIUM
Friday, September 15th
10 am: “The Astronomer’s Disappearing Sky” – 1 hr.
Dr. Larry Marschall, a professor of physics, has taught astronomy, physics, and science writing for over 43 years. Tens of thousands of satellites have been launched into orbit around Earth. Join Larry to explore the impacts of satellites on how we experience the night sky.
12 pm: “Exploring the Cosmos: Astrophotography and Electronically Assisted Astronomy” – 1 hr.
Henry Ricci is a longtime member of the Cape Cod Astronomical Society, who first got into astrophotography at the age of 12. His presentation will describe various types of astrophotography, including Electronically Assisted Astronomy (EAA), basic equipment, techniques and tools for capturing some of the most amazing subjects in our night sky!
Saturday, September 16th
10 am: “Basics of Amateur Astronomy” – 1 hr.
Jonathan Hatch is a member of the Cape Cod Astronomical Society, where he serves as the secretary and web designer. His presentation will provide a basic overview of amateur astronomy tools and equipment. He will cover objects in the night sky (planets, stars, galaxies, clusters, nebulae), basic observation techniques, including with the unaided eye, binoculars and telescopes, and what’s possible with typical amateur tools.
12 pm: “Astrophotography with Simple Equipment” – 1 hr.
Dr. Frank Isik is local Wellfletian amateur astronomer who loves the challenge of astrophotography. Join his presentation to learn about the the art of astrophotography. He will go over the use of simple equipment, to create the most mesmerizing photographs of the night sky.
