Still reflecting its settlement history as a small fishing village that grew into a prosperous seaport in the nineteenth century, Hyannis continues to be the regional transportation, jobs, service and commerce center for all of Cape Cod.  Hyannis is Cape Cod’s Downtown.  Hyannis’ compact, mixed-use urban core supports a culturally, socially and economically vibrant place. The Main Street and Harbor areas include a concentration of cultural attractions - museums, performing arts space, studios, and galleries, unique locally-owned shops and restaurants.  The rich and varied commercial and maritime history of Hyannis is evident as Colonial and Greek Revival sea captains’ homes reflect the seaport history, small businesses occupy historic commercial storefronts, and the Hyannis Harbor working waterfront set within these cultural assets.

Streetscape improvements knit together these unique sites and features visually and are designed to reflect the maritime heritage of the village as they enhance the walkable, pedestrian-oriented environment.  The “Walkway to the Sea” guides visitors between Main Street and around Hyannis Harbor.  The Kennedy Legacy Trail attracts several thousand visitors each year.  These public infrastructure investments reflect the ongoing commitment to the revitalization of downtown Hyannis.  These investments accompanied by private investment and support from the business and arts communities make Hyannis one of Cape Cod’s most unique cultural destinations - a sustainable, livable community enhanced by a growing creative economy and a distinctive sense of place.  The Hyannis HyArts Cultural District was the first state designated district on Cape Cod.  The District focuses the Town and its partners on the common goals to attract artists, cultural and creative enterprises; encourage business and job retention and creation; further establish the district as a tourist destination; preserve and reuse historic buildings; enhance property values; and foster local cultural development.

The fusion of events, artist workspace, exhibits, shanties and performing arts work together to keep the arts and culture economic stimulus active and productive.  The vibrant arts and culture community within the towns two cultural districts (Hyannis Hyarts and Barnstable Village) and in all villages illustrates the towns support of the creative economy and commitment to promoting and developing this area as a regional destination for the arts.

Community Spotlight:  A portrait series

This mural spotlights five community members, who embody the unique, hard-working, creative & fun loving nature of the Cape Cod culture.  Artist Kate DeCiccio captured the essence of community locals; these portraits reflect the artist’s dedication to painting people with an attention to how they see themselves within their community.  The mural is on display May through October as a backdrop to the stage at Asleton Park. Those featured include:

Sarah Swain, singer and songwriter, mother of three, gallery owner and president of a non-profit organization helping those on the Cape dealing with cancer, started in honor and memory of her mother.   Brandon and Justin Madison, twin brother commercial lobster fisherman whose shirts display their captains Bro Cote and Pete Brown. Brandon & Justin were adamant that they wanted to include Bro & Pete in the portrait because the Sea Captains have been tantamount in teaching them the trade and cultivating a passion for the incredibly hard work at sea.   Tim Friary, father of three and owner and master farmer at Cape Cod Organic farms, one of the first organic farms on the Cape.  He shares seasonal fruits & veggies all over the Cape and even raises pigs for organic meat. Here, Tim is featured with some of his delectable strawberries.Arlene Johnson, mother, grandmother and lifelong educator, avid birder and gardener, who at over 80 years old, still walks with her husband to a popular ice cream shop to have iced coffee and  a treat at the ice cream counter every day. Arlene taught for many years and now volunteers at a local nursery school.

From “Peer Gynt,” you’ll hear Edvard Grieg’s exciting “In the Hall of the Mountain King,” as well as his well-known “Morning Mood” portraying the rising of the sun.  In addition, we’ll perform Grieg’s most beloved piano concerto featuring his fellow Norwegian, virtuoso Knut Erik Jensen. We’re excited to present the heroic “Finlandia” by Jean Sibelius, celebrating the pride of the Finnish people.

For the first time, the Cape Symphony will perform a work by the Danish composer Carl Neilsen, “Helios Overture,” an orchestral showpiece which also recalls a sunrise – and sunset.  At this unique concert, the Cape’s own Bo Ericsson will be featured in Swede Lars-Erik Larsson’s “Concertino for Cello.” These Scandinavian treasures match the timeless beauty of this Northern region, filled with a noble elegance and deeply felt passion.

Johannes Brahms revered Franz Joseph Haydn, the father of the symphony. Enjoy two of the greats and their musical connection.
Jung-Ho Pak, Conductor

“Haydn created all our music, he gave one symphony after another to the world.” Johannes Brahms, 1896

Johannes Brahms revered Franz Joseph Haydn so much, he kept a bust of the great master in his bedroom. Haydn was known as the father of the symphony – plus, he helped invent the string quartet. Cape Symphony’s star string principals will present the Haydn string quartet nicknamed “The Sunrise.”  A century later, Brahms wrote “Variations on a Theme by Haydn” in tribute to the admired composer.  Brahms is known for creating extraordinarily passionate melodies and intricate rhythms such as those you’ll hear in his Symphony No. 3. Enjoy two of the greats and their musical connection.
