This restored 1865 barn showcases artists in a variety of genres.  It serves as a community art space with year round exhibits, art classes/workshops and demonstrations.  The Barn is an important part on the campus of town owned buildings-the HyArts Campus which includes artist housing and work studios/gallery on the corner of Pearl and South Streets.  Artist studios/gallery are open to the public year round.

GALLERY ARTRIO:

Gallery Artrio specializes in original fine art by award-winning and nationally recognized artists, as well as emerging artists of note.  Media includes oil, pastel, encaustics, hand-blown glass from local artists, and beautiful hand wrought jewelry.  The gallery hosts openings throughout the summer including plein air painting as part of Cape Cod Hydrangea festival and artist receptions.  The annual Gallery Soiree is held in September each year. A major center of activity, the HYCC is a full service, year round community center that features state-of-the-art accessible facilities for a variety of recreational programs and special events, competitive sports organizations, after-school activities and opportunities for the community at large to foster educational excellence and physical growth across all generations. The center includes twin NHL size rinks, a 12,500 sq ft wood floor gymnasium, skate park and walking track. Residents and visitors can attend theater on ice events, antique and home shows, nature expo, dance and yoga classes; the programs and activies are non-stop!

 

Shellfishing Mentoring Program

The BARS Shellfish Mentoring Program began in 2004 by assisting Barnstable Natural Resources with their Clamming for Kids classes. Group classes were scheduled and opened to the general public. Lessons were given on how to shellfish for quahogs, steamer clams, razor clams, mussels, and oysters.

Join us for our annual winter Reading and Discussion Series

Sturgis Library first opened its doors for business in August 1867, making 2017 our 150th anniversary.  As part of our celebration, our winter literary discussion program will focus on books of note from the past 150 years. 

Dr. James Crowley, associate professor at Bridgewater State University will lead a discussion of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale.  Published in 1985, Atwood’s award winning novel explores a broad range of issues relating to power, gender, and religious politics.  It has been adapted for a television series that premieres this spring.

He will share original tips and easy-to- understand strategies for downsizing that we can all use to begin the process of change.  This will be an upbeat and motivational session. Dave promises we will all come away with useful information and a smile on our faces!  Don’t miss this fun event!
