Painting with Alcohol Inks
Saturday, June 2
9:30-AM-3:30PM
$110 Members/$125 Non Members (cost includes a $15 Material Fee)
Alcohol Ink is a highly pigmented and quick-drying medium applied by pouring, brushing or stamping on a non-porous surface such as Yupo.
The vibrant colors of this ink intermingle creating unique textural effects, often leading to unexpected results.
Working with alcohol inks offers opportunities to approach painting more intuitively and expressively with a sense of creative playfulness.
The six-hour workshop (with a break for lunch) will begin with an introduction to alcohol ink as a painting medium and a demonstration in techniques of pouring, brushing and creating textures with inks.  The remaining time will be used for personal exploration with time to complete many paintings on Yupo.  The workshop will end with a critique allowing participants to share their paintings and to discuss what they have discovered.
All materials will be included.  *It would be advisable to bring a paint shirt or apron to protect clothing.  There will be protective gloves provided.

Let’s Talk Prevention: Reducing Toxic Exposures with Cheryl Osimo 6/4

Let’s Talk Prevention: Reducing Toxic Exposures with Cheryl Osimo 6/4

June 4, 2018

The Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition (MBCC) is dedicated to preventing environmental causes of breast cancer through community education, research, advocacy and changes to public policy.
This talk, given by Cheryl Osimo, Executive Director of MBCC and Co Founder of Silent Spring Institute, will cover:
-Environmental exposures, chemicals of concern and their potential health impact
-The importance of reducing toxic exposures which has implications for reducing the burden and cost of all environmentally-linked diseases, including breast cancer
-Time for sharing by participants on how breast cancer and other cancers has affected them or someone they know and how it has impacted their lives

Ms. Osimo has been a devoted breast cancer activist and advocate since 1991 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 41. She joined the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition (MBCC) because of the organization’s commitment to telling the truth about breast cancer, and served as a MBCC Board member from 1992-2003. Ms. Osimo is one of the founders of Silent Spring Institute, an independent environmental research institution founded by the MBCC, and is also the Cape Cod Coordinator for the Institute. She has been a catalyst in raising public awareness of the possible environmental links to breast cancer on Cape Cod and a strong advocate for the Cape Cod Breast Cancer and the Environment Study. Her commitment to this study is a result of her belief that the findings will benefit women not only on the Cape, but worldwide.

Cougar the Musical at the Cotuit Center for the Arts 6/7-24

Cougar the Musical at the Cotuit Center for the Arts 6/7-24

June 7, 2018

“Hilarious, soulful and heartwarming,” Cougar the Musical by Donna Moore unleashes three divine but disillusioned women who develop a taste for hot, young men. They let their inner cougar roar and purr, finding self-love and empowerment in the process. The sexy, ferocious cast of three fabulous-over-forty women and one multi-talented boy toy sing and dance their way through a satiating range of original songs, from grinding blues, to doo-wop, to pop to “Julio,” a romantic ballad, sung to a vibrator.

Hilarious, soulful and heartwarming, Cougar the Musical is a madcap ride from Cougar Bar to nail salon to boudoir and back as the women learn to say “yes” to getting older, “yes” to trust and friendship and to proving that love is ageless.

Film and Discussion: Living While Dying 6/8

Film and Discussion: Living While Dying 6/8

June 8, 2018

“Death kept showing up,” says filmmaker Cathy Zheutlin. “So I picked up a camera to document my friends with terminal illnesses, and sought the advice of a death walker and Aboriginal elder in Australia. Now death prompts my conversations with my beloved 91-year-old mom, regarding her wishes at the end of life.” The film, Living While Dying is a wholehearted look at vulnerability and courage as baby boomers reclaim conscious dying. Join filmmaker Cathy Zheutlin this afternoon for a 45-minute documentary film screening, a personal journey alongside four of her friends with terminal illnesses, followed by a candid conversation about facing our mortality.

Artist Bio:
As far as I can remember color has fascinated and affected me deeply. This may be because I have been exposed to its vibrancy since a very early age. I was born and raised in the Dominican Republic where explosions of color happen everywhere you look under the intense Caribbean light.
Flowers were my first inspiration, not only because their wonderful colors but also for their symbolic appeal.  They carry the promise of life. I also love to paint forests, waterfalls and landscapes, they express nature’s mysteries and it is their quiet sacredness that I try to capture in my paintings.  When I visit unspoiled places, I embrace the visual as well as the spiritual and it is my hope that I can transmit their power and magical energy through my work. I have lived over 40 years in the US.  It is my pleasure to call New England my home.-Evelyn Bernal

Las Cafeteras in Concert at the Cotuit Center for the Arts 6/9

Las Cafeteras in Concert at the Cotuit Center for the Arts 6/9

June 9, 2018

Las Cafeteras have taken the music scene by storm with their infectious live performances and have crossed-genre and musical borders, playing with bands such as Mexican icons Caifanes, Lila Downs, Colombian superstar Juanes, Los Angeles legends Ozomatli, folk/indie favorites Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, and most recently with Talib Kweli.
Born and raised east of the Los Angeles river, Las Cafeteras are remixing roots music and telling modern day stories. Las Cafeteras create a vibrant musical fusion with a unique East LA sound and positive message. Their Afro-Mexican beats, rhythms, and rhymes deliver inspiring lyrics that document stories of a community seeking love and justice in the concrete jungle of Los Angeles. Using traditional Son Jarocho instruments like the jarana, requinto, quijada (donkey jawbone) and tarima (a wooden platform), Las Cafeteras sing in English, Spanish, and Spanglish and add a remix of sounds, from rock to hip-hop to rancheras. Las Cafeteras use music as a vehicle to build bridges among different cultures and communities, and create ‘a world where many worlds fit’.

“uniquely Angeleno mishmash of punk, hip-hop, beat music, cumbia and rock … live, they’re magnetic.”

Japan and Its Prints in the Floating World At Sturgis Library 6/12

Japan and Its Prints in the Floating World At Sturgis Library 6/12

June 12, 2018

Japan and Its Prints in the Floating World At Sturgis Library Tuesday June 12 @ 6:30 pm
Japanese print enthusiast Tom Silver explores the origin and development of Japanese prints during the Edo era (1600-1867). The first rudimentary prints focused on courtesans and kabuki actors, with the genre ultimately developing into the sophisticated art form admired by the likes of Monet and van Gogh. This lecture encompasses many of the most familiar names in Japanese prints - including Utamaro, Hokusai, and Hiroshige. We will look at early period prints and then focus on masterpieces by each of these artists. At the conclusion of the lecture there will be a display of Japanese crafts from the last two centuries.
Free to the public. Application is appreciated. Call 508-362-6636, email sturgisreference@comcast.net, or visit http://www.sturgislibrary.org/event2/japan-and-its-prints-in-the-floating-world/

2nd Wednesday Theater at the Cotuit Arts Center 6/13

2nd Wednesday Theater at the Cotuit Arts Center 6/13

June 13, 2018

2nd Wednesday Theater: a monthly play reading of rarely performed classics, undiscovered gems, old chestnuts, and exciting new works.

June definitely brings an exciting new work: Rumble Bumble, by Cape Cod writer John Pomeroy, presented by Matt Kohler and the New Classics Company, famed for full-length original plays, festivals, workshops, weekly improv and comedy shows, and their notorious series of Star Wars spoofs.

Now in its fifth summer in residence at the Guyer Barn in Hyannis, The New Classics Company has become a vital part of the artistic life of the HyArts Cultural District.
“Rumble Bumble” is a musical, a comedy, and an exploration of the mind of Tommy, the star (along with three singing puppets) of the smash hit syndicated children’s television program “Rumble Bumble,” which takes place on the farm of the same name.
Tommy faces a real dilemma: he enjoys his success on the show, but at the same time feels as though his happy-go-lucky, kid-friendly role limits his possibilities as an actor and as a man.

Will Tommy stay with the show and endure a possible life sentence of typecasting? Or will he figure out if all of his problems are just in his head?
Lucky for Tommy he receives guidance from his friends, as well as the puppets from his show, who—unbeknownst to the world—talk and sing musical numbers with their pal Tommy.
You just knew there would be singing puppets, didn’t you?
Rumble Bumble
Written by John Pomeroy, presented by Matt Kohler.

Creative Post Processing w/ John Klingel 6/23

Creative Post Processing w/ John Klingel 6/23

June 23, 2018

Creative Post Processing: Turning Photos Into Masterpieces
Instructor: John Klingel
(Off-site. Located in Eastham. Instructor will email you address)
Day: Saturday, June 23rd
Time: 9:00am-5:00pm
Price: Members $110 /Non-Members $140
Digital photography gives us an opportunity to take relatively normal photos and turn them in to masterpieces. In this workshop, we’ll go beyond normal post processing and look at creative post processing.
We’ll start by looking at post processing in general. We’ll first discuss corrections that might be needed to improve composition. The next goal will be to help you understand how to look at a photo to determine what needs to be done. One of the basic objectives is to determine where you want the viewer’s eye to go. So we’ll discuss how to direct the viewer’s eye. And as often there are distracting elements pulling the viewer’s eye where you don’t want it, we’ll discuss ways of removing elements or reducing their intensity.
Then we’ll review a number of tools that you can use in creative post processing and demo how these tools can be used to maximize a photograph’s potential. These tools will include Photoshop, Lightroom as well as, a number of plug-ins and pre-sets, including NIK, DxO Optics Pro, Topaz, On-One and others. You’ll be amazed at how much punch and “wow factor” you can add to your photographs. While most of the discussion will center on post processing color, the workshop will also cover B&W conversion and combining B&W with selective color.
This session is designed to stimulate your creativity and help you create photos that have that “wow” factor.
