Cape Cod: Light on the Landscape
with Mark Bowie
This workshop is offered in May and October:
May 2018: Thursday, May 3-Sunday, May 6-starting at 6PM Thursday
October 2018: Thursday, Oct 18-Sunday, Oct 21- starting at 6:30PM Thursday
Cost: Members $330 Non-Members $400
Program Description
It all starts with the light… and the Cape has a special quality of light.  Here it interacts with the convergence of land and sea, the salty atmosphere, a variety of coastal environments and distinctive subject matter, all of which make this place unique.  In this brand new workshop, we’ll explore Cape light from pre-dawn to deep night, to experience the essence of this place and craft meaningful images — images with feeling, that come from the heart.
Professional landscape photographer and night shooting expert Mark Bowie will lead this power-packed workshop on the innovative techniques he uses for taking extraordinary landscape imagery.  He will lead day and night photography field sessions to some of the Cape’s finest scenery: the ocean, beaches, dunes, coastal waterways, lighthouses and fishing villages.  Our schedule and selection of shooting locations will remain flexible to take best advantage of the weather and lighting conditions.  Indoor instructional sessions will be held at the Cape Cod Art Center in Barnstable.  Mark will explore the beautiful interaction of light and subject that speaks to somewhere deep within us.  He’ll also offer strategies, tips and techniques for the field and the digital darkroom on:
The quality, direction and color of light
Reading weather and shooting the light
The interaction of light and subject matter
Shooting at sunrise, sunset, twilight and at night
Photographing the night landscape in relation to the celestial skies
  Seeing from different vantage points
Designing and fine-tuning powerful compositions using the principles of visual flow, dynamic tension, balance, leading lines, shapes and patterns
Using exposure to control mood and atmosphere
  Determining exposure at night
  Achieving critical focus-day and night
  Using Live View
Working creatively with your full suite of lenses
Varying shutter speed for artistic effect
  Targeting color and tonal palettes
  The artistry of long exposures
  Creating expressionistic abstracts
Shooting multiple exposures — layer masks, HDR’s, panoramas, star trails and time-lapse sequences — and blending them with state-of-the-art software
Focus stacking to maximize depth of field
  Processing images for maximum impact
Informative and inspiring, this workshop is geared for both amateur and advanced photographers who want to take their landscape imagery to new levels.  Join Mark to explore the wonders of Cape Cod light.  “Find the light and shoot what’s in it.”

Wild Animal Photography-Tips, Tricks and Techniques- John Klingel 5/5

Wild Animal Photography-Tips, Tricks and Techniques- John Klingel 5/5

May 5, 2018

Nature Photography-Wild Animal Photography, Tips, Tricks and Techniques
Instructor: John Klingel
Day: Saturday, May 5
Time: 9:00am-5:00pm
Cost: $80 members / $100 non-members
Workshop will be held in Eastham. Location will be emailed upon registration.
There’s nothing more exciting than capturing a great photograph of a wild animal be it a mountain lion, a fox or a hawk. However, animal photography which is often referred to as nature photography is very challenging. Which camera settings do you use? How fast a shutter speed do you need? What lens do you need? How high should the ISO be? What makes a good composition? How do you deal with bad light? And there’s a lot more involved in taking photos of wild animals. This workshop will provide an overview of what’s involved in the various camera settings, composition, equipment, choosing the right locations and right light, post processing and lots of tips. In addition, John will show a lot of nature photos as examples of how to deal with various situations. Much of the instruction in this session will also apply to action photography such as sports, pet photography, and street photography. After the workshop presentation, participants are invited to practice what they’ve learned by joining John at a photo shoot at Herring Run.
Instructor Bio-
John lives in California during the winter and is a member and past Vice-President of the Marin Photo Club. During about five months of the year, he lives in Eastham in an 1860’s farm house on Town Cove. In past years, he has taught HDR and Focus Stacking for the Cape Cod Art Association. John is an avid nature photographer and has traveled to many locations including Botswana and Borneo and to many locations in the US and Canada including Yellowstone, Basque del Apache, Machias Island, Monterey and the Triple D Ranch in Montana. You don’t have to travel to get great nature photos and one of John’s favorite shots is the “Herring Gull Eating a Herring” that was taken in Brewster. All of the Klingel workshops include handouts of all the presentation information and other reference material.

May 8, 2018

Did the Reverend get away with murder?
Greg Williams will give an interactive presentation dealing with the history, myths, and stories surrounding the first major murder case in Fall River.

This class is geared towards students who already know how to use Lightroom or Photoshop but want to learn additional processing techniques with this popular software to take their images to the next level.
Instructor Bio:
Betty Wiley is a freelance photographer who resides in Massachusetts on Cape Cod in the beautiful, little town of Yarmouth Port. Originally from Las Vegas, Nevada, she moved to Massachusetts over 30 years ago and bought a home on the Cape with her husband in 2006. She quickly fell in love with the natural beauty of the area and since then, she has spent countless hours exploring the Cape with her camera. She believes that good light is often key to a successful photograph. Often, the storms that move through the area create dramatic light and beautiful clouds and when that happens, she usually grabs her camera and hops in her car as the skies begin to clear.
Betty is a frequent contributor to a number of magazines on Cape Cod and the South Shore. She was featured in a photo essay which appeared in the July (2011) issue of Cape Cod magazine which showcased her images taken on Cape Cod and the islands. She has numerous magazine assignments and covers to her credit and is an experienced speaker, instructor and workshop leader and has received numerous accolades for her teaching and on-location workshops.

May 12, 2018

HDR Photography
Instructor: John Klingel
Day: Saturday, May 12
Time: 9:00am-5:00pm
Price: Members $80/Non-Members $100
A camera can only record about six stops of light compared to the eye which can see 13 to 20 stops. HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography allows a digital camera to photograph up to about 14 stops by taking a series of photos and combining them.
In this hands-on workshop, students will explore how HDR opens up a range of new opportunities for photographers, while learning how to shoot the series of exposures needed for processing. Students will gain an understanding of how to use and read a histogram, one of the keys to successful HDR.
Session includes shooting and how to process HDR photos, as well as a review of the major software applications such as Photoshop CS5, Photomatix 4.0 and NIK HDR Pro. In addition to reviewing the global adjustments, we’ll look at doing local adjustments with Photoshop CS5 masking techniques and NIK HDR Pro control point adjustments. At the end of the sessions, you’ll know how to shoot and process HDR and you’ll have a good understanding of the pros and cons of the various software packages.
Prerequisite-
Intro photography class, or similar experience; familiarity with your camera functions; some experience with Photoshop, Lightroom or other editing program.
(Held offsite in Eastham. Instructor will email you location upon registration.)

The Art of Landscape Photography Workshop Falmouth to Bourne w/ Ronald Wilson & Bob Berger 5/18-20

The Art of Landscape Photography Workshop Falmouth to Bourne w/ Ronald Wilson & Bob Berger 5/18-20

May 18, 2018

The Art of Landscape Photography Workshop
Field Locations: Falmouth to Bourne
Dates: May 18-20 (Friday, Saturday and Sunday)
Meeting Location: Seacrest Hotel, Falmouth www.seacrestbeachhotel.com
Limit 12 | All levels welcome
From a lighthouse at Nobska Point in Woods Hole to Monk’s Cove in Little Bay, the towns of Falmouth and Bourne on Buzzards Bay have an abundance of sites from The Knob to Spohr Garden, from Ashumet Holly Sanctuary to Bourne Farm, from Red Brook Pond to Beebe Woods.
“The question is not what you look at, but what you see” Henri David Thoreau
The art of seeing is an active process of observing the world around us with deliberate thoughtfulness. In photography it’s what you do with what you see that counts. Subject matter provides the build blocks while composition acts like the glue holding it all together. and light sets the stage for capturing a moment capable of conveying a sense of being there.
The workshop begins on Friday evening with an orientation and power point presentation on “The Art of Landscape Photography” covering the aesthetics of photography and technical aspects of camera functions. The workshop features approximately 10 hours in the field with 3-hour sessions beginning each day in the predawn and in the afternoons until twilight. Ronald has an intimate knowledge of these regions and designs an itinerary based on habitat, tides and weather. Walking distances will vary from roadside vantage points to moderate trail hikes.
Complimenting the field experience will be 6 – 8 hours of classroom time where we will meet each day for an open dialogue covering subjects from capture to post processing – Lightroom and Photoshop. The digital age has considerably enhanced our ability to teach. Individual instruction, viewing images and group critiques to evaluate results is done in an environment that seeks to help you build confidence in your creative and technical skills and become a better photographer.

Saturday, May 19 & Sunday, May 20
10:00AM – 4:30PM with lunch break
$225 Members/$255 Non-Members (includes $30 Material Fee for model fees and clay)

The ability to sculpt a realistic head in clay allows the artist to capture the essence or likeness of someone they admire or love in a three-dimensional form.
This class is for beginner and intermediate level students who want to learn how to create realistic portraits in clay.  Instructor Neil Grant teaches a step by step method that demystifies the process for sculpting a head.
Using a model and other materials as reference, students will learn how to look at a person, simplify what they are seeing and sculpt a realistic likeness.  At each stage of the process, Neil will explain the theory, give a demonstration of the technique, and then work one on one with each student as they create their sculpture.  The aim of the workshop is to give students a method they can take away with them and use to make portrait sculptures in the future.

*Stands and tools will be provided but students are welcome to bring their own preferred tools if they have them.

The Armistice and the Treaty of Versailles Remembered 5/26

The Armistice and the Treaty of Versailles Remembered 5/26

May 26, 2018

This 1 hour PowerPoint talk will explore the impact of both the Armistice and the Treaty of Versailles. At the conclusion of the First World War the world was a hopeful place—the “war to end all wars” was finally over. There was much to consider—the devastated landscapes, lives, and economies of European nations were just the start. Memorials and epic graveyards went up in an attempt to dignify and remember all those who perished. Poetry and artwork from the period struggled to find meaning in what seemed like a meaningless slaughter. Woodrow Wilson’s crusade to ‘make the world safe for democracy’ will be examined and discussed. Finally, the extremely biased conditions of the Treaty of Versailles resulted in the seeds of discontent that would ultimately culminate in the birth of fascism—it would take yet another world war to rectify the problems that resulted from end of the Great War.

Being onboard a boat and experiencing close-up encounters with whales is very special. These majestic mammals often venture quite close to the boat. It can, however, be quite difficult to capture behaviors with your camera. This exciting new workshop is designed so that you will acquire all the skills necessary to capture great shots of whales. Tom will not only present some group sessions, he will also help each participant individually as needed, to make sure their cameras are set up correctly and that they are ‘up-to-speed’ with their photographic techniques. Once everyone is set up, while onboard Tom will problem solve & coach the participants, to make sure they are ready for when the whales start to appear and getting well-composed images with proper exposure and focus using techniques keyed upon in the morning workshop.
The workshop starts at Cape Cod Art Center in West Barnstable and then will continue onboard the Hyannis Whale Watcher (Barnstable) which will transport you to Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary for an unforgettable encounter with the whales. Any whale sightings in the vicinity are closely monitored and the Captain will get as close as is legally allowed to the whales. Often, the whales will swim right up to, and under, the vessel itself. The photographic workshop is geared towards various skill levels and Tom is very patient with participants. Questions are very welcome! Following the workshop, Tom has an edit and print lab/workshop/ class on Thursday afternoons at The Art Center. a wonderful opportunity to play with your whale images and make some gallery worthy prints.
The morning pre-shoot seminar introducing photographic techniques and tips for successful shipboard photography in diverse maritime conditions such as shooting while in motion, low and bright light, back-lighting, understanding how to overcome diverse weather conditions and turn it into an advantage. Tom will also take the time to help make sure all your settings are adjusted correctly for the afternoon shoot.

Description:
The most productive experience with my formal photographic studies was not graduate level color theory or advanced lighting with master fashion photographers. It was a little summer class in The West Village of New York City in the early 1980’s for high school kids… Our instructor taught us the basics then turned us loose on the city. We would meet once a week and she would circle the best images on our contact sheets, give us a little art direction towards improvement, send us into the darkroom to make a few prints, then send us back out into the streets to make better images based on our own developing strengths & styles.
So these are the core elements of the workshop… If you understand digital photo basics, have a laptop or tablet for editing in Lightroom, and have the desire to become a better photographer/photo editor this is a great workshop for creative growth and development. There is no better subject matter than a summer day or night on Cape Cod.
This course is designed to be both a one-day editing/printing module or as an ongoing workshop for edit skills, portfolio building, printing and creative development. $60.00 per class or 4 classes for 200.00 this includes 3: 8x 10 prints per class and an opportunity to print additional images up to 24 inches for a nominal lab fee. Limited to 12 attendees per class. This is a perfect accompaniment to any photographic or digital media workshop taken at the Art Center or independently.
What to bring: A laptop or tablet with Adobe Lightroom images will be edited using Lightroom and electronically transferred to a large format printer for printing.
Prerequisites: A basic working knowledge of laptop or tablet and basic camera and Lightroom skills.  A one-on-one mentorship is available with Tom if assistance is needed to make it to the basic level.
