Soup with Marcia 3/1

Soup with Marcia 3/1

March 1, 2018

Mar. 1, 1:30-3 p.m. Fee-$3
Soup season is here and Marcia Raftery wants to share her soup recipes with you. If you’ve never made your own, you may be surprised to discover just how easy it is to prepare soups. They require very little work and can provide nourishment for an entire week. Unfortunately, many people are tempted to buy canned or otherwise prepared soups instead of making their own. The problem with store-bought soup is that it doesn’t taste as good as home-made. Canned and prepackaged soups are also made with low-grade ingredients, and usually very high in sodium, as a means to mask the flavor of sub-par ingredients. Don’t miss this fun taste of soup with Marcia. February will be Pasta Fagioli and the March soup is Kale. Yummy!

“Once ferocious sword-wielding monks charged with protecting the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the Knights Templar met defeat at the end of the Crusades, although their influence could be felt throughout the course of history. Cotuit Center for the Arts presents “Jesus Christ Superstar”  opens 3/9

Cotuit Center for the Arts presents “Jesus Christ Superstar”  opens 3/9

March 9, 2018

Jesus Christ Superstar is a rock opera loosely based on the Gospels’ accounts of the last week of Jesus’ life. It highlights political and interpersonal struggles between Judas Iscariot and Jesus, as largely told from Judas’ perspective. The Tony Award-winning score includes hit songs “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” “Gethsemane,” “Heaven on Their Minds,” “Everything’s Alright,” “King Herod’s Song,” and “Superstar.”
Christ’s final days are dramatized with emotional intensity, thought-provoking edge and explosive theatricality. Propelled by a stirring score, by turns driving and majestic, satirical and tender, Jesus Christ Superstar illuminates the transcendent power of the human spirit with a passion that goes straight to the heart.
Directed by Stephen Colella and Rebecca Riley, Music Direction by Malcolm Granger, Choreography by Laura Shea.

Cost: $75 Member | $95 Non-Member
*This is an intermediate level class.  Some experience with creating mobile digital art, using any app, is necessary.

What is a mask? In digital art, a mask is a tool to let you do something to a part of the image but not the whole.
What sort of something?  Anything.  You can change the exposure in a dark area of the image.  You can smooth only the skin.  You can make part of the image black and white.  You can blur the background.
You can ADD things to an image.  You can add a texture to the background.  You can add an object.  You can REMOVE or REPLACE things from an image.
We are going to focus on making masks in two apps: iColorama and Procreate.  I will also show you a simple way to cut out objects from photos that is useful for composite images. Different apps work in different ways, and different masking techniques work better for certain types of jobs. After you are comfortable with basic masking, we will explore some more advanced masking techniques.

Xylophonia - Ragtime Marimba Band at the Cotuit Center for the Arts 3/28

Xylophonia - Ragtime Marimba Band at the Cotuit Center for the Arts 3/28

March 28, 2018

XYLOPHONIA celebrates the golden age of the xylophone during the 1920’s and 1930’s, and especially the music of George Hamilton Green, the greatest xylophone virtuoso of his time. Green was also a prolific composer, arranger and recording artist, and a hugely influential teacher and instrument designer. Along with his brother Joseph Green, and other great xylophonists such as Sammy Herman, Harry Breuer and Red Norvo, George Hamilton Green made the xylophone a favorite and much-respected presence on both the concert and vaudeville stages.  The xylophone was a perfect medium for the popular ragtime and dance music of the day, for radio, silent movies, and for the early acoustic recording process.

XYLOPHONIA is a group of 5 professional percussionists who perform these famous xylophone solos accompanied by four players on two marimbas. (The group takes its name from the title of one of Joseph Green’s famous compositions.)
