You have the basic skills, you can paint what something “looks” like with relative ease, but now it’s time to expand your artistic vocabulary and that comes through experimentation. We often fall into patterns of working and develop limiting beliefs of what painting is “supposed to be”. I will challenge those beliefs and ask you questions to help you figure out that direction your work wants to go in. All mediums are welcome and there is also a press so print-making techniques can be explored and incorporated.

Elegies for Angels, Punks, and Raging Queens at The Cotuit Center for the Arts 11/2

Elegies for Angels, Punks, and Raging Queens at The Cotuit Center for the Arts 11/2

November 2, 2017

Celebrate love, life, and the connections we have with one another!

Elegies For Angels, Punks and Raging Queens is a cycle of songs and monologues by Bill Russell (Side Show, Unexpected Joy) and music by Janet Hood.

The work is inspired by the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt and Edgar Lee Masters’ “Spoon River Anthology.” The piece was developed in the late 1980s and was originally titled “The Quilt.”

Dramatic, powerful and emotionally intense, Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens celebrates those have lost their lives to AIDS. Through a series of heart-rending monologues, hear the struggles of various people who have battled with the disease. Each coming from very different walks of life, every character has their own unique story to share, but one tragic link in common. Interspersing these stories are the poignant and uplifting songs from the victims’ loved ones, reminding us that AIDS affects the lives of more than the individual sufferers.

Stage and Music Direction by Katie Lynch Koglin

Reviews:

“Generates a feeling of love, humanity and common cause that sends you out glowing.” - Glasgow Herald

“Immensely powerful…. The songs are uniformly good; the final song is sensational.” - Financial Times

“It is an elegy, not just to ‘Angels, punks and raging queens’, but to suffering and togetherness.” - The Times

“Bursts with humour, rage and hope.” - Backstage

Passport to Scandinavia with The Cape Cod Symphony 11/4 and 11/5

November 4, 2017

Travel with us through the magnificent countries of Scandinavia as we present famous masterpieces inspired by stunning landscapes and folk traditions.

From “Peer Gynt,” you’ll hear Edvard Grieg’s exciting “In the Hall of the Mountain King,” as well as his well-known “Morning Mood” portraying the rising of the sun.  In addition, we’ll perform Grieg’s most beloved piano concerto featuring his fellow Norwegian, virtuoso Knut Erik Jensen. We’re excited to present the heroic “Finlandia” by Jean Sibelius, celebrating the pride of the Finnish people.

For the first time, the Cape Symphony will perform a work by the Danish composer Carl Neilsen, “Helios Overture,” an orchestral showpiece which also recalls a sunrise – and sunset.  At this unique concert, the Cape’s own Bo Ericsson will be featured in Swede Lars-Erik Larsson’s “Concertino for Cello.” These Scandinavian treasures match the timeless beauty of this Northern region, filled with a noble elegance and deeply felt passion.

Understanding layers and masks in Photoshop
Layers and masks are powerful tools in Photoshop/Photoshop Elements and can really be described as the heart and soul in both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.  This evening workshop is designed to demystify layers and masks in Photoshop and Elements and you will see the many ways that these tools can be used in your editing workflow.  Layers and masks are really quite simple to use.
This will be a hands-on class where you will bring your own laptop and work on sample images, step-by-step.  The goal is for you to leave this workshop with a good understanding of how to use layers and masks.  A handout will be provided to workshop attendees.
This class is geared toward those who have Photoshop or Photoshop Elements (versions that support the use of layers).  Students should have some familiarity with either program although proficiency is not required.  This is not a computer class however and students will need to know how to access files and navigate the computer.

2nd Wednesday Theater: The Money Shot at The Cotuit Center for the Arts 11/8

November 8, 2017

2nd Wednesday Theater: a monthly play-reading of rarely-performed classics, undiscovered gems, old chestnuts, and exciting new works. November 8 we present The Money Shot, by Neil LaBute.
This raunchy, acerbic Hollywood satire presents four characters perched on the showbiz power ladder. Two screen idols past their peak and in desperate need of a hit assemble to discuss a sensitive professional matter with their respective partners. The scene they’ll be shooting together the next day will be climactic in more ways than one, as their psychotic director wants them to have real, honest-to-badness sex on camera. (The term “money shot” comes from pornographic film.) But before they commit their coupling to digital eternity, they want to clear it with their partners. The meeting starts nasty, turns nastier and finally segues into no-holds-barred and often hilarious confrontation.

Sky Replacement Techniques using Photoshop/Elements w/ Betty Wiley 11/18

November 18, 2017

Sky Replacement Techniques using Photoshop/Elements
(and Plug-ins such as Perfect Layers from On-One and Luminar from MacPhun)
Instructor: Betty Wiley
Date: Saturday, November 18
Time: 1:00pm-4:00pm
Cost: $70 Member/$90 Non Member
In this class, Betty will show you how to replace bland, boring, colorless skies focusing on using Photoshop/Photoshop Elements.  The techniques that Betty will demonstrate in this session are relatively easy and fast and create a believable look.  This is a popular class that Betty has taught to many groups and organizations.  Learn how to jazz up your images by replacing those ugly, bland boring skies easily and quickly!
This class will be focused on techniques using Photoshop/Photoshop Elements however Betty will also demonstrate other ways to replace skies using plug-ins such as Perfect Layers from On-One and Luminar from MacPhun software.  Perfect layers and Luminar are great alternatives if students do not own or use Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.
This is a hands-on class because we believe everyone learns best by practicing and doing instead of simply watching a presentation.  Therefore, students are encouraged to bring their own laptops.  Basic computer skills are required and students should be able to find and access files on their own computers.  Since this class is primarily geared toward techniques using Photoshop/Elements, students should be familiar with using this software although proficiency is not required to take this class.

We will provide sample images for students to work on during class.
