February 15, 2017

Feb. 1-Mar. 29 Wednesdays, 11 a.m.-12 p.m. Free-Walk-in
Mudra is Sanskrit for seal, mark, or gesture. Mudras hand gestures are used during meditation as a way to direct energy flow in the body. According to yoga, different areas of the hand can stimulate specific areas of the brain. By applying light pressure to these areas of the hand, you are able to activate the corresponding region of the brain. Different positions of the hand will improve memory, eyesight, and hearing. It also has a calming effect. This class will begin with gentle stretches and acupressure for relaxation followed by Mudras, meditation and music. This will be facilitated by Town of Barnstable Public Health Nurse, Peg Stanton.

Sturgis Library “Off the Shelf” Art Project

Sturgis Library “Off the Shelf” Art Project

February 28, 2017

Create a piece of art from a piece of Sturgis Library! Stop by the Sturgis Library’s Circulation Desk and ask for a shelf from old 1920s bookshelves that were stored for many years in the basement. Take the shelf home and transform it into something new. Paint on it, sculpt it, carve it, cut it up, sand it down — whatever inspires you. Then donate it back to the Library by August 1st, 2017 to be auctioned off at the Library’s 150th Anniversary gala.

All proceeds from these works of art will benefit the newly established Sturgis Library Preservation Fund. Monies from this fund will be used exclusively for the preservation of the Library’s building, grounds, special collections, and archives.

Intro to Lightroom with Betty Wiley Tuesdays 2/21-3/28

February 28, 2017

Over the 6 week period, students will learn how to import and organize images in Lightroom as well as how to develop images and use the other features in this popular editing program.  This course is ideal for beginners through intermediate users or those who want a refresher on how to use the software.

Because we all learn by doing, students are encouraged to bring laptops to class (note that students will need to be familiar with how to use a computer and be able to navigate to folders on their hard drive).  Students will need to have Lightroom (preferably version 5.x) installed and running on their computers. This class will be hands-on and will be focused on the features in Lightroom 6 however much of the course material will also be applicable to Lightroom 5.

150 Years of Reading Great Books

150 Years of Reading Great Books

February 28, 2017

Sturgis Library first opened its doors for business in August 1867, making 2017 our 150th anniversary.  As part of our celebration, our winter literary discussion program will focus on books of note from the past 150 years.
Anne Speyer, editor, library director and teacher, will lead a discussion of selections from Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass.
When the first edition of Walt Whitman’s anthology Leaves of Grass burst onto the literary scene in 1855, it not only changed forever the shape of poetry but also revolutionized its content.  Shocking to American nineteenth century sensibilities—and it surely shocked many staid Cape Codders—Whitman celebrated everything about being human and being alive: our bodies and emotions, our work and our play, our desires and our diversity.
This program is free, but registration is required
