April 27, 2018

April celebrates two environmentally-friendly days: Earth Day (4/22) and Arbor Day (4/27). It also celebrates Japanese Heritage Day (4/30), so this year Cotuit Library decided to screen two movies that combines all of these themes.

By internationally famous director Hayao Miyazaki, known for his themes of environmental consciousness, we’ll be showing Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (PG) on 4/21 & Princess Mononoke (PG - 13) on 4/27. Both movies portray the effects that humans have on the world around us, and the struggle to keep it alive.

Attendance to the movies is free, but please register at cotuitlibrary.org/events or contact the library.

Pilgrims’ Progress: Music of the Plimoth Colony Settlers 4/27

Pilgrims’ Progress: Music of the Plimoth Colony Settlers 4/27

April 27, 2018

The Plimoth colonists, or “Pilgrims” as they were later called, were a diverse group of Separatists and Anglicans, religious zealots and irreverent opportunists, many of whom had lived in the Netherlands prior to their emigration. They brought with them music experiences as varied as their reasons for coming to the New World, and the Plimoth Colony heard not just solemn English psalms, but also catches, ballads, and dance tunes, to which we add instrumental music of the English court. We’ll celebrate the Meetinghouse’s 300th anniversary with music of Morley and Ravenscroft, plus selections from the Dutch ‘t Uitnement Kabinet, Sternhold & Hopkins’ Whole Booke of Psalmes, and John Playford’s English Dancing Master.

This app can be used with photographs generated from any mobile device, or sent to your mobile device from your computer. Blending and masking in iColorama is unique to the app but is quite rewarding when mastered and can lead to beautiful montages or image composites. Blending can also be used for textures, colors and lighting effects.
This is a hands on class, so please bring your iPad (preferred) with images loaded for editing. An Apple Pencil or stylus would be helpful but not required. Please load iColorama onto your device before arriving.
The app can be purchased at the app store, and while you’re there, please take a look at the reviews. They are glowing!

Talk and Book Signing with Anthony M. Amore

A Special Event to Benefit Tales of Cape Cod and the Restoration of the Colonial Courthouse
Sunday, April 29, 2018; Finger foods reception, cash bar, book signing 6:00 pm; Talk 7:00
Every day Anthony Amore goes to work at Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, he sees an empty frame on the wall that used to hold Johannes Vermeer’s The Concert, one of 13 paintings stolen from the Gardner on March 18, 1990.  Amore, since 2015, the head of security at the Gardner and its chief theft investigator, has been on the hunt for those paintings, making, as he puts it, the haystack smaller. One day, he vows, he will find the needle.

Art theft is a multi-billion dollar per year illicit industry, and the world’s most significant heists share one thing in common: the priceless works of Rembrandt. The great Dutch Master’s paintings are known for their value by everyone, from high school dropouts to museum curators. While Hollywood has portrayed the theft of high-value paintings as the work of dashing, likeable thieves working to steal art for evil, reclusive geniuses, in fact that’s nothing like the reality of art theft. Instead, it’s much more interesting. Amore takes his audience behind the scenes of the most notorious of these heists, telling the true story of art crime from the conception of the crime to the recovery of the art.

The True Story of International Art Theft
Talk and Book Signing with Anthony M. Amore
