Masterpiece 3 - Haydn to Brahms with The Cape Cod Symphony 1/20 and 1/21 2018

January 20, 2018 11:35 am

Johannes Brahms revered Franz Joseph Haydn, the father of the symphony. Enjoy two of the greats and their musical connection.
Jung-Ho Pak, Conductor
“Haydn created all our music, he gave one symphony after another to the world.” Johannes Brahms, 1896
Johannes Brahms revered Franz Joseph Haydn so much, he kept a bust of the great master in his bedroom. Haydn was known as the father of the symphony – plus, he helped invent the string quartet. Cape Symphony’s star string principals will present the Haydn string quartet nicknamed “The Sunrise.”  A century later, Brahms wrote “Variations on a Theme by Haydn” in tribute to the admired composer.  Brahms is known for creating extraordinarily passionate melodies and intricate rhythms such as those you’ll hear in his Symphony No. 3. Enjoy two of the greats and their musical connection.

One of the most whimsical and charming figures of all time, Don Quixote is an ordinary man who imagines he’s a brave knight battling giants and winning fair maidens.  He inspired many artists through the centuries, including three very different interpretations featured in this show. Joining us will be the passionate and dynamic 2017 GRAMMY-winning cellist Zuill Bailey, representing Don Quixote in a tone poem by Richard Strauss. You’ll also hear Telemann’s “Don Quixote Suite,” a Baroque take on the story.  Dramatic baritone Philip Lima will perform the role of Don Quixote in Ravel’s song cycle “Don Quixote to Dulcinea,” singing of his love for his perfect lady, praying for her to be blessed, and ending with a boisterous drinking song.  Come dream impossible dreams with us!
